Losing a £20 deposit is one thing but £500, that's just not on….The guy knows this and is trying his luck….
I know you need to be tactful but my guess is this won't work afterall he seems to have no morals….
Wouldn't suggest you do it, but I know what my approach would be….."I know where you live and if I don't get my deposit back within 3 days you'll get a visit over christmas"……
Like I said I'm not recommending this, but I think this guy is beyond reasoning…
Hope you come to an amicable solution..

if not ring the police say you gave a guy a deposit for a car, he sold the car to someone else before you came to pick up the car.
yes its really a civil matter but play it as theft.. and the police will go round his..
he then has to prove otherwise.. a solicitors letter for like £30 sometimes makes them up their boxers in the washer..
hope you get it sorted.

You did not send £500.00 to someone who you did not know anything about did you, or at least where they lived.
By your responses I guess you are doing all this by email are you ?, which means he has everything written down received from you.
Your only real option to me is to ring the police and play dumb and say the £500.00 was part payment for the car and he then sold it to someone else, I think even though the police will eventually find out once round his house they will more then likely persuade him to send money back.
Gotta be worth a try, he is obviously not gonna send money back on his own accord is he

You decided you didnt have the money after all, so you have lost your deposit im afraid. (no matter the reason you broke the verbal contract)
If he was a decent person he could give it back or even give half back but he's not obligated to.
Make sure you have the money to complete a sale.
Dont put so much down as a deposit.
Good Luck

…just had a phone call from the seller we both agreed to go 50/ 50 …….so £250 should be heading back into my bank account .
didn't mention anything about the police , but i'm happy with that . would like to think he is a decent chap and did it off his own back …
and apparently the car is booked in for a magazine feature straight away by the new owner …..cheers for all the replies
