9a Vs KR block

thought they were both 92.8 stroke

Sorry my bad, bit drowsy from a cold, in my mind i thought KR. Yes same crank throw the ABF has longer con rods. There isn't really a difference. Take a read here for some comparative reading: ClubGTI - 9A-ABF comparison

Thanks for the link, lots of info there.  I have been offered a 2.0l 16V block out of a corrado but i want to make sure its a 9a engine.  Can anyone tell me how i can identify it please?

on the back of the block above the sump there will be a big 2.0 stamped on it.  you must ensure it has that as some corrados were 1.8's

If it is a 2 litre from a corrado it will definitely be a 9A, corrado had both KR and 9A engines but no ABF.

Although it rolled off the production line with a 9a block i want to confirm that is what is in it now, i want to be certain it hasnt had an engine swap at some stage so im looking for a way of identifying a 9a block, can anyone help?

do you want me to type it again???

LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE BLOCK ABOVE THE SUMP AND THERE WILL BE A BIG '2.0' RAISED UP OFF THE BLOCK.

IF IT HAS A 1.8 IT IS A KR, IF IT HAS A 2.0 IT WILL BE A 9A

Yes Lee, but is there a slim possibility that the 9a could have been trashed and it replaced with an ABF at some point??
If that were the case, how could the OP be sure it is a 9a and not an ABF?
I am interested in this also as IK am after a 2.0 16v engine for my Mk1.
Cheers

dipstick, alternator, manifolds etc are all different on the ABF but if it had everything transfered from a 9a to an ABF bare block im not sure you would be able to tell.  The ABF is slightly taller but thats it.  Actually look at the stamp on the head at what year it was made, that could give you some indication.

The abf has a round hole in the block just to the right of the oil filter housing (from memory, too cold to go and look) for the crank sensor which i doubt the 9a has.

Think your right there.  The 9a deffo doesn't have a crank sensor so if the ABF has then bingo
