2.0 16v ABF Conversion

Hi all

Apologies for the undoubted repost.

I have decided to sell my GTI engine and go ABF which looks easy enough, I think, but can anyone tell me or give me a link to a 'walk through' or similar to help guide me along the way?

I have looked but can't find one.

Thanks

David

John is a legend, helped me along the way and im a  newbie to most of this hands on work.
One thing im stuck with though is clutch cable, im using a self adjusting seat one from the donor, seems to work fine appart from fitment at the bulk head, what do you guys use?

assumign 02a gearbox yah? mk1 1.3 is what you want. you may need to cut the inner tube cut down a touch as they can be a bit too short. snip a few coils of the metal spring part down if that makes sense

Yeah 02a box. .i seem to keep reading they use the ones I have already!? Is it the correct length that's the issue or just fitment?

just the fitment, if you could switch mk1 bulkhead fittings to the seat cable you would be ok. maybe cut a slot in the fittings off an old donor cable and slip em over or summat

crez: for throttle cable mk1 carb supposed to be a good fit, i used mk2 16v on mine. clutch its a case of trial fit a few runs till you get the least possible sharp bends in the cable, i managed to get mine routed along the bulkhead behind the engine. same goes for the speedo cable

wannabe: yarp, but you need to change the clutch kit for mk1/2 gti 8v 210mm unit and use a 1.8 210mm flywheel

cheers jonny, ive got two throttle cables, one of which should be perfect but has the wrong end on with the rubber plug type fitment, may get that off, and use a solderless nipple, or was going to make one out of a mountain bike brake cable, was going to come straight out bulkhead, along the top of fuel rail and back around the inlet. seems long way around but it saves that tight bend straight from bulkhead.

as for clutch cable, ive found some other hefty rubber bungs I was going to use on bulkhead followed by a big washer to spread the pressure.

the mk1 carby cable i think is a lot longer than mk2 so it helps with the bends, on mine i used a mk2 cable with lots of silicone spray down it to help with the tight routing

will have alook and see what I can do. may of sorted the clutch cable tonight, my mate managed tofind me a perfect mk1 rubber bung for clutch cable which somehow managed to thread it over the self adjusting clutch cable.

the pedal is stiff tho, not sure how you get the cable to adjust though?

Post

with the self- adjust ones you need to compress it and hold with the white plastic clip, then fit to car. then release the clip and push the pedal a couple tiems and it self-adjusts.

if its an old one you might find it no longer works!

that's the end of that then, the white clip is long gone, replaced with a cable tie, will see if I can get it sorted to last a while atleast,

thanks again bud

the clip is only there to hold it in the compressed position while you fit/remove, so you dont need it once the cable is fitted and working. some cable ties would do instead if you can get them clipped tight enough
