Girling 54 problem fitting!!

Post

Hi guys, just found this forum looking for answers but didnt find so desided to ask.

So, i just bought girling 54 calipers, brackets, 256 discs etc. The problem is that it has 95mm and my mk1 has 75mm! I have found some g60 brake adapters but they all say 280mm. So can i buy the g60 brake adapters that i can fit the brakes to my spindels and run 256mm discs (because of wheels)

Thanks!

Hi,
You need the Audi or 16V Scirocco carriers from the same era, they have the correct 75mm pitch and let you fit the Girling 54's

Girling 54 problem fitting!!

For the cars/part numbers look in this thread:
http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=modifications-and_2%2Faudi-80-coupe-2-6-v6

I only think that you can get adaptors for 280mm as there is not enough room for 256mm versions.
There is a solution using a Vauxhall setup that requires some shoulder bolts - search this forum or google it as there are loads of folks who have done it.

Thank you mate, you've been big help! I think i will order the 280mm adapter and put 280discs too. Little bit worried how they are going to clear the wheels but hopefully i can make them work!

Bare in mind that you will then need 280mm carriers AND adaptors to fit 280mm discs…

Oooh.. These brake things are quite a black area for me. Thanks for the heads up. My friend has 256mm discs with modified adapters for clearance. That might be the solution for me.. The best way of course would be to find the correct carriers for 256 but those are quite hard to find so i might try with modified adapters.

dont forget you will need 15" wheels for 280s, and even then some dont clear

Hi, anyone know if the 280mm setup fits behind BBS RA's?

Post

sometimes. it depends what specific RA you have, plus it also depends on which version of the caliper you have as there are various casting differences plus the 256 ones are narrower. if you use 256mm pads those are thinner too which gives a bit more clearance to the caliper

Hi I currently have the Audi 256 setup. Does anyone know if I can convert this to a 280mm setup using the Audi Girling 54 caliper fitted to 280mm girling carriers and a conversion bracket such as the epitec ones.
Would this fit behind a bbs ra 15 mk2 16v type?

yes, if you fit the 280 calipers, carriers and adaptors everything will bolt together with 280mm pads or 256mm pads.

However since the 280 calipers are bigger this could give clearance issues even with 256mm pads. But if you keep the audi calipers since they are narrower you'll have to use part worn 256mm pads, and/or grind the slider pins down a bit to get them over the thicker 280mm discs
