Tail lights

My 1980 mk1 has long tail lights and i just want to find out if i would be able to replace them with the short version before i commit and order new tail lights. I prefer the way the short ones look but will they fit or if the car has long ones does that mean i can only have long tail lights on the car?

The short ones will leave holes where the long ones fit.
You would need to weld in a back panel from an earlier car to fit the short ones.
