Swapping 1.6 carb to 1.8 K-jetronic Help needed!

Post

Hi guys.

So im swapping 1.6 carb to 1.8 k-jetronic. I have all the electrics from the k-jet car + engine, trans, fuel pump etc. So the question is do i really need to swap the fuel tank as i have read that there is difference in carburettor fuel tank vs fuel injection tank.. And where does the k-jet fuel pump combination mount? I have been searching a lot and learning everything about k-jet i can find. The fuel tank/fuel lines seems really complicated looking on haynes book. So much valves/breather lines.. :D

Thanks!

I couldn't say about the differences between the tanks but the gti ones have a lift pump inside the tank. This goes to the external pump which is mounted on the drivers side. This is just in front of the tank itself. Which is connected to the fuel accumulator, which is situated next to the pump.
Do you have the wiring going from the fuel pump relay to the pump itself ?

Oh okay.. The carb one doesnt have lift pump inside the tank but i dont know about kjet then.. And yes i should have that wiring also.

Hi, I've done this swap on an old A reg golf.  I had a 1,3 carb which I swapped to 1.8 injection.  I used the same tank and didn't install a pick up pump.  The outlet on the tank was at the bottom, probably about 20mm in diameter.  I piped this up to the electric pump.  I installed the metal fuel pipes under the car instead of the plastic ones as the fuel is under a greater pressure and didn't want a pipe to burst.
I swapped the full engine and dash looms over by unplugging form the rear of the fuse box as I wanted working MFA too.  Then is was a case of fitting engine and box, driveshafts etc.  I did have to cut out the offside engine mount flip it over and weld it back on the chassis leg.  I also uprated the brakes too as I was still on solid discs.
Good luck with the swap.

Thank you! Much appreciated. My inlet and outlet pipes comes from the top and line from that goes to bottom of the tank.

pre-84 carb and gti tanks are different, the gti has an internal swirl pot and the outlet for the main pump is at the bottom.  after 84 the tank design for the cabrio and sirocco was changes, and the same unit is used for all cars regardless of engine.

if you want to use the carb tank and/or its a late car what you need is post-84 kjet fuel setup which has a lifter pump in the tank, a plastic swirl pot under the car and a smaller fuel accumulator which is relocated nearer the fuel tank to make space for the pot. plus all the relevant pipes and brackets

Yes my car is -79 scirocco and i have no idea where the engine is taken but my guess that it's post 84 kjet.. The pump combo looks like this.

And the differenses i see is that mine doesnt have that one connector at the bottom and the tank for kjet has. So it doesnt work if i connect the hoses at the top of the tank where goes pipe to bottom of tank..?

thats a mk2 gofl fuel setup, you will struggle to get that to fit, unless its a caddy!

One more question. Why is it hard to fit? You mean because of the space?

yes its very wide, the space under the car is narrow. offer it up you'll see what I mean straight away!

Okay so can you point me on a right direction with fuel tank? Mk1 carb or kjet fuel tank? Difference is on one connector?

if you are using the mk2 main pump then either use a carb tank and a post-84 cabrio/scirocco lifter pump to supply the mk2 pump, or a mk1 gti tank and use a pre-supply pump such as facet on the lower outlet to feed the mk2 pump
