Seat belt winds the wrong way

Post

I've got to go out in a min, but I have scrap car that might have a belt in it. I'll have a look later and see if I can take it apart to see what's going on.

There is a left and right to them as far as the belt goes. and I never take the spring cover off, but I have sprayed the hades out of them to clear the dirt and debris…I used WD-40 and Filled it full….let it work a bit spooled and unspooled the core to allow it to get between the spring wraps, then dribbeled it out, dit it about 3 times per retractor….  I found that the rear Cabrio Belts had the same mechanism but with a few extra parts, so I could remove the extra bits that weren't needed, and unspool the belts and replace webbing for them, and move the gravity catch over and they worked just fine.

Here's a pic of the spring. In this Position the belt would be fully retracted.

Oh, that's interesting.

So if that would be its position with the belt wound on to the spool, mine does indeed rotate in the opposite direction  :|

How the hell did you get the side off without the coil escaping? Is it rusted in?

It could be tighter than that. It depends how much tension you want on it.

Once the tension is off it, it's less likely to fly out.

Oh and you wind the tension on in this direction

So it's safe to say mine goes in the opposite direction to yours then - pulling out the belt would rotate the spool anti-clockwise.

With that in mind, I may as well try to flip the coil. I don't rate my chances, but it's useless otherwise.

So you think I should let it spool the belt in a much as possibles to relax then tension, then try to remove it?

Yes flip it around, dont try to wind it the other way. Take the belt off and let the reel wind all the way back. Try anything to keep it wound, cellotape or something. If it does come unwound just try to wind it back up.

Don't flip that spring, you will never get it wound correctly, trust me on that as I have done it once, and only once, and when it flew or uncoiled it wanted to take my eye out as it seemed to be 30 feet long, and striking towards my face like a Cobra having a bad day.

The coil is specific to the side of the car it is on.  If you have the wrong belt on the wrong winding spool that is why it appears to be going the wrong way.

Yep, that's what happened to me.

Not saying you're wrong, but I don't follow the logic.

Regardless of which side it was placed on, it would still spool in the wrong direction. Unless there was another factor at play such being mounted upside down.

Has the spring been changes before. Did you put a new one in?

Ok let it go on purpose. Any bets on if it goes back in 😝

That can't be the same type of spring

Trust me, it flew out and tied it's self in a knot. I unraveled it the put it back in. As you see it in the photo you actually have to wind it back in opposite to the way it's curling.

All right, but if this goes wrong...
