I've got to go out in a min, but I have scrap car that might have a belt in it. I'll have a look later and see if I can take it apart to see what's going on.

So if that would be its position with the belt wound on to the spool, mine does indeed rotate in the opposite direction
How the hell did you get the side off without the coil escaping? Is it rusted in?

With that in mind, I may as well try to flip the coil. I don't rate my chances, but it's useless otherwise.
So you think I should let it spool the belt in a much as possibles to relax then tension, then try to remove it?

The coil is specific to the side of the car it is on. If you have the wrong belt on the wrong winding spool that is why it appears to be going the wrong way.

Don't flip that spring, you will never get it wound correctly, trust me on that as I have done it once, and only once, and when it flew or uncoiled it wanted to take my eye out as it seemed to be 30 feet long, and striking towards my face like a Cobra having a bad day.
Yep, that's what happened to me.

Not saying you're wrong, but I don't follow the logic.
Regardless of which side it was placed on, it would still spool in the wrong direction. Unless there was another factor at play such being mounted upside down.
