Respray advice/opinion

Post

Hi All,

I've had my cabby in for a fairly major cosmetic overhaul of late- I put the car in with the local VW specialist who's looked after the car the last few years,  and agreed he'd manage the respray - as they haven't a paint shop and I've neither the space or skills to have undertaken the initial strip/investigation etc and i've a good relationship with them.

It's back and we're going to go over it together on Monday to check for snags, but as I know where it's being kept I just popped up to have an initial look. There's a few things i've spotted- most noticeably, there's a spot on one panel where the paint has 'pooled' slightly in the channel for the wasitline trim, so you see a couple of drips.

BUT- This is the first time I've had a car go through this process so I'm interested- how perfect should I expect it to be? For context, it's been quoted at what I believe is a fair level, certainly not cheap and cheerful.

The wasitline section I mentioned above feels a no brainer, but what about things the recessed panel edges in the shut lines etc, should they be perfect in your opinion? And what should I double check on Monday?

In hindsight I'd perhaps not have done it this way if I did it again, as I've not had any direct dealings with the paint shop, but it is what it is and I just want to make sure I feel it's fair all round.

I appreciate this might be a slightly subjective question,  but any views are useful/welcome!

thanks

Andy

There shouldn't be any drips or runs or pooling in the paint on the waist line.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Depends on £ and what was discussed "I want it show winning Concours d'Elegance" or "I want it daily driver commensurate with age and value of vehicle".

However even for a cheap blast over if a non expert like yourself can spot sagging and running drip issues I'd say its not fit for purpose and needs sorting.

I work now in a paint shop…. and we do get the odd runs, but as its fresh paint and the shop should have more left, then its quite possible to rub it down with fine wet and dry and then re-spray with lacquer and polish back.
At the very least mark each section and photograph… send to the painters to go over the areas again..
we do occasionally miss a bit, and you are within rights to have it put back as good as possible.
Early-1800 is correct you get what you pay for i'm afraid., and it sucks .
I've had to travel 30- 60 miles to get correct paints for door repairs, the paint readers are pants at times.  So changing painter would be more hassle …
