Oil temp sensor on MK1 Clipper

Post

Hi All

I am trying to fit VDO gauges to my MK1 Clipper and am struggling to work out where the Oil Temp sender goes. Having looked online I believe it needs to go into the oil filter housing, so I bought a T piece but when I came to fit it I think my Clipper does not have a current oil temp sender, so my question is does the sender I have fit into the top of the housing where the Allen head bolt is currently? I have attached a photo of what I have. The bolt is solid so are there any alternatives?

Any IMG_2366.JPG  help gratefully received!

Cheers

Pete

The oil TEMP sender can screw into the boss at the top of the filter.

The Oil Pressure and low Pressure can is on the (as you look at the engine) on the right side of the head and infront of the water outlet.

oil pressure sensor. low pressure switch is the gold can on the side of the head, there is either a sensor or a boss plug on yours.

Top of 89 filter flange shows the BLACK single pin oil temp sender in front of the open boss for the high pressure cut switch.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Many thanks, I am fine with the oil pressure sender, looks like my car does jot have a oil temp sender currently as there is a blanking plate with a hexagonal head where it might go, does this sound right? In the picture I attached it is the brown thing on top of the oil filter housing.

Regular golfs/rabbits didn't have a oil temp sender.
This was an addition to the GTI's, Cabriolets, Sciroccos
as well as Corrado's on the lower shifter console.

So the filter flange had the additional boss, and a Hex (or actually Allen) plug on it.

You had a high pressure switch normally installed at the rear.

The Oil pressure low sensor was attached to the side of the head. I have seen Green Blue, and brown low pressure switches over here on the sides of the head.

I have seen folks take the plug out of the filter flange and relocate the low pressure switch, oil pressure sender to the flange…. and use the flanges "Allen" plug on the head.  Matters not what you do, just be sure that you "Plug" the open hole.  :)

Many thanks, so it looks like I am going to have to carry on trying to undo that boss on the oil filter, thanks for confirming as I wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing before I struggled on!

with the oil pressure gauge sender first check if its a dual pole one, and if so check the markings/specs to see which of the 2 switches it replaces. the most common will have 0.3bar marked on it, and goes in the side of the head. but 1.8 bar versions do exist, they would go in the filter housing

Hi John

The oil pressure one works fine, but I cannot get the boss out of the oil filter housing to install the oil temp sensor, is there another boss somewhere I could use? Otherwise I might have to give up!

cheers

it should just unscrew, but if its been there since it was built could be well siezed in there! can use a T piece in the side of the head or the filter housing worst case, something like this:

So it is ok to use the t piece with a pressure sensor and a temp sensor in the side of the head?

yes not a problem, the G40 and G60 do pretty much the same they have a T piece for the charger oil feed and one of the oil pressure switches

I know I'm late to the party, but I have a 1983 Rabbit, and have been trying to figure out where the heck this light green/black wire by my oil filter goes.
Briano1234 if the regular Rabbits didn't have oil temperature sensor, would they still have that wire? I ordered a sensor that fits the oil filter housing once I remove the boss, so should I hook it up? Will it even do anything?
There is another plug between the filter housing and the engine with a light blue wire, plus the other one you described on the right side of the head (brown wire).
One of the shop receipts from the previous owner says "oil sensors",  so I want to make sure everything is hooked up appropriately, especially since I've been having performance issues when the car is warmed up.

I have seen the oil wire included and used on various scirocco looms I've had in for conversion, but not Golf versions, though I only see European ones ;)

if you dont have an oil gauge or MFA clocks then this wire wont do anything, if you look behind the fusebox you'll probably find an unused green/black wire with female spade which is the other end of this unused wire
