Engine problem?
Hi Guys; quite new to the scene so not very technically minded! I'm having a little difficulty with my Mk1 Cabriolet. She starts fine, but leave her idle, she loses revs then cuts out. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I thought it may have been a dirty fuel tank/ Carb. This has been sorted, but it's still happening. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome. You may have to dig a bit deeper. Clean all the filters and if possible clean the fuel lines And pumps. That's if you suspect the contamination got further. If drives ok as is then your need to ramp up idle setting a bit. That should stop it cutting out when stood.

As Ken mentions but do start with the very basics and work up.
Is it the same when the engine is cold, warm and hot?
Was it standing for any length of time?
If you're not sure of the above give it a hard, high rev and fast blast for an hour and then let it go cold and see what happens.
This might just help you to understand in which haystack you need to look for the needle or needles or at least it's a start!

Thanks for the help guys; fuel lines have been changed. I've had her since August 2015 and all was going well and the gentleman I bought her from used her regularly. Also, last time I took her out she would loose power, with my foot on the accelerator and then wouldn't start again. Could the same be causing this?

Stupid question have you checked accelerate cable for grommet bush on the pedal And its fitment to the carb, on my injection one was tie wrapped to to rocker.causing it to slip when warm. The end result was driving and all power went one night ended up driving on idle revs 2km.luckily. also similar loss of power from distributer. Hope helps.

Vacuum leaks, bad fuel pump relay come to mind for both issues.
Also knowing the engine type year, and fuel system goes a long way to refining the issue.
