Noisy gearbox

Post

So whilst I've got my Campaign on the road and historic road tax, running it is a good feeling after 8 years in bits - some jobs to do yet but annoyingly the gearbox is noisy.

When the clutch is depressed it goes quiet so defo gearbox whine.

Could it be the release bearing ? I've replaced it but may have got it wrong ??🤷🏼‍♂️ that would be the easy solution to replace….

If not think I'll have get a recon unit and get it fitted.

It's certainly fought me every step this Golf

Usually the layshaft bearings or more uncommon the input shaft bearing

Further to it being the clutch release bearing. It would be more likely to get noisy as you depressed the clutch pedal and loaded the clutch release bearing. There should be no load on the release bearing when the clutch isn't depressed and is likely not to even be going round in that position and therefore quiet. Getting the gearbox out isn't too much of trial, as it's on the end of the engine and you don't need to disturb the engine or the wiring. I had to change a gearbox when some silly sod forgot to check the gearbox oil level. If I remember rightly a gearbox from a Maestro is a direct fit.

Many thanks for that.

I've a spare out of a 1.8 gti Cabriolet. Not sure if it's condition internally or indeed if driveshaft cup size is 100mm or 90mm - I'll check as could get that checked over/recon and swop it over.

It's also leaking gearbox fluid out of speedo cable location despite new gasket and fixing bolt being tight ? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Someone has mentioned an O ring ? Where does this go 🤔 and what is part number. Did look on VW heritage site to see what is being referred to and location of it - sounds like I'm missing this

Have you overfilled the gearbox oil? Mine leaked from there for a bit then stopped. Equally I don't remember an o-ring on mine.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

If it is the same design as my mk2 rS200 gearbox. The seal fits at the back of the square speedo pinion which you have to pull out of the gearbox no idea how you do that in a golf tho'.. Haynes manual is no help as gearboxes are "too difficult for the masses"

Looking at the ubiquitous Utube it would appear that the speedo drive comes with an inbuilt seal

you could do worse than ask Heritage. I find them very helpful and reply in 24hrs.

Yes could ring Heritage and see if there is a location point for that part number.

I'm taking the car to a gearbox specialist in Hull for him to get feel of what problem is by taking him for a spin. Then based on what he says I'll take car home, pull box out and take box to him for rebuild/repair. Seems the likely low cost option albeit it a faff for me.

I can't drive it around as a) too noisy and spoils pleasure b) possible further damage done

What gearbox oil have you got in there and how old is the oil?

If you remove the filler bolt on the side of the gearbox is the oil level with the filler hole?
