MFA Switch not working

MFA works but the short term and long term switch doesn't work

Hi everyone. I am having a problem with my MFA. The computer seems to work fine but the two position switch on the washer stalk will not switch the computer from the long term setting to the short term image.jpeg and it will not zero the computer. The MFA switch on the end of the stalk works fine.

Also, the outside temperature doesn't seem to show. I have no idea where the sensor is.

I haven't taken anything apart yet and I'm hoping it is just dirty contacts but if you have any suggestions and if anyone can give me a clue as to why the temperature doesn't show it would be appreciated

Thanks

Sensor for the outside temputure is attached to the inside of the front bumper, it's on the drivers side near the headlight, it's hard to see it but you may be able to feel it. Check it's still there and wire attached.

MFA has some wires traveling down the stick to a plug behind the steering cowl.

the extra 1/2 button has a separate 2 pin plug in the back of the cluster, could be that has come out

Thanks for the ideas. I have now done a bit of stripping and have got the temperature working. I have gone up to the point where I need to take the clocks out but as I need the car I have stopped there for now

The MFA stalk has four wires coming from it (white, red, black and blue). I have check continuity of the stalk and it would appear to be working correctly. It is also connected to the four pin plug that goes to the MFA. As the scroll switch works I can only assume that it is connected correctly.

I did find a two pin plug that isn't connected to anything in the back of the dash. It comes from the wiring loom and I can't find anywhere it may connect to.  Could be nothing.

At least I can tell how warm it is outside now!

yes on the 4 pin plug for the mfa, one wire goes to earth, one goes to the main plug on the bottom of the clocks and the last 2 go into the back of the cluster :)

red/white and black/white from memory, the plug is the same as what VW speakers use if you know the one I mean

Have you any photos of where the two pin plug connects to on the MFA clocks?

Any use?
In picture 6 there is the plug you are after.
The instrument cluster is slightly different to my 88 gti as I only have 2 connections, the main big one underneath and the MFA you are on about so I guess there is a couple of different instruments but I recon it's the same as yours as its for a later car.

How the simple things frustrate us so much. I could just feel the connector socket around the side of the clocks and managed to get the connector in without removing the clocks. Now everything works. Thanks very much for your help!

Next problem to tackle is the alarm!
