Stretching mohair material
Hi all, need some help with my new mohair roof, im 99,9% sure its a correct roof for a car bought from reputable seller etc, however its just feels a bit to tight/small, tried stretching with hot water towels, heat gun etc, no luck, any ideas? The roof was stored for a couple of years in a warm room, could it be that it shrank over the years?
Thanks

Did you cut out the rear window opening?
This is what you see on a mohair roof, when you didn't cut the rear window opening
You mark where the rear window frame is meeting the hood with chalk, then go inside about 4-5 inches.

Hm thats a good point, that probably will solve the rear, however it feels like im short on couple cm's upfront in width :/
Is there a way to check its correct roof for the car? Ie could it be that its very similar to other brands?
I compared to my old one and it looks almost identical other than the rear side fixing point (as per pic) which is tad bit shorter on the new one.

Yes you set the rear cable, then the front lip, Curl it at a 45-80 degree bend up. Set the side frames, then close your top and you will find it won't close it will be about 2 inches high. Mark the outline for your rear window, then cut out the inside about 4-6 inches from the outside mark, and you will see that you top will now close properly…. you will have sufficient material to staple the frame
Chortle should chime in here in a BIT. It is unnerving…

Cutting out the hole for the rear window releases the tension on the top, Vinyl hoods can be installed either way, cut out or no cut out as vinyl will stretch and forgive, Canvas or mohair is a wee bit different as you have to cut out the rear window so your cable will stay seated correctly, and that your top won't close fully.

Personally I’d not cut the window out until the hood is fully fitted and the hood closed.
What process did you follow for fitting this?
Where did you start, where have you glued.
I’m guessing this is a BAS hood?
The ones I’ve used tend to be on the short side.
I had to use ratchet straps to winch the hood down. Therefore they are not a supplier I’d use as a first choice.
Whereabouts are you located?

Ill start with rear cable and go from there.
Process wise im one of those people who measure 10 times before cutting so nothing is glued or cut for that matter, yet, well other than the headliner and intermediate level, them two fitted in nicely.
Yes it is a BAS hood
Im based in machester
thanks

Ok
I’d not fit the top until you’ve sorted the stuff out underneath properly.
From that photo the headliner frame tension band looks wrong.
Otherwise it’s top off to redo it.
And starting with the rear cable is not how things should be done.
You won’t get the best result with the fitting.

you mean that white strap around? its a piece from old roof skin, i left it for a reference. so just need to drill out before putting new stuff on.
Everything else is done according to guides i found on internet/youtube.
The new intermediate level is not stapled yet, ill do it together with the new roof skin.
I temporarily put the rear cable on and managed to stretch to the point where i was able to close the roof fully, so length wise i should be ok, its just the sides im still worried that it wont stretch enough :/
Where would you start then? if the rear cable is not starting point?
thanks

You must complete each section completely first before the hood goes on.
1) headliner must be finished
2)interliner and padding must be finished
Only then can the hood be fitted.
You will end up burying parts that you will need to get to that you should of finished already.
You doing tings in a random manner..
I haven’t read any guides but the rear cable is the second last bit you fit…

im not doing things randomly i just checked everything before stapling gluing etc and took the pics for the roof skin since i was worried its too tight.
as i mentioned before, now all is completed other than the top skin and stapling intermediate level (they staple together according to the guides i read/watched)
tbh i noticed everyone has their on way of putting the roof skin/hood, some say start with sides some rear some front, also looks like it also depends on what material is used, i investigated all to some degree and hope starting from the rear in my case will achieve best results
thanks

Ok it’s pointless trying to make the top fit.
Fit everything underneath and worry about the top when you come to do it.
You won’t know how it will go until it’s fitted as parts will stretch.
Placing it on and pulling it about is not how it will work in real life.
Personally I would not do the rear cable first.

The top and the interliner are not stapled together at all.
Both are separate parts.
I’m Not sure why anyone would suggest that even.
Each layer is completed separately.
The reason why I’m saying your fitting randomly is because your wording is saying your pulling sides, fitting cables and closing the hood.
Whilst not completing everything else before hand.

Ok i may expressed my self wrong here, the straps of them both get stapled on one stapling point as per video here, from 23min How to install Volkswagen cabriolet convertible top - YouTube also my old roof and i believe it was still the original roof was done the same way.
And yes, after i done all the work with the headliner and inter level i tried putting the top skin on, to see whats the best way of doing it, just as a try out without glueing, cutting etc. so incase its to tight i would not waste any time on it, as per my first post i kept the roof skin in a very warm (over 40c) room, for some years, hence my worry, mohair as a material tend to shrink.
When i compared new and old top skins i noticed that the new one is significantly smaller, hence i laid it on top while i was still working on the other levels, for pic purposes so i could explain better where the issue is.

You mean the hood pull in straps and the interliner straps are riveted to the frame.
Personally I would not follow that video.
The finish on that hood is not great.
The lower beaded edge is all wonky all the way around.
Rear cable is showing.
Plus where the trims go for the cover are awful.
They aren’t in line.
Plus the front side flaps are not pulled round far enough and corners aren’t seated correctly.

facepalm emoji… i keep mixing the staples and rivets.
Agree the job he did looks awful.. the way he hammered that rivet off, i would not allow such a cowboy work on my car..
Only watched this as a guide for the correct sequence etc. as many others for that matter, and lots of 'how to guides'
