Gear selector

Post

I had a problem with the gear selector rod popping off on my mk1 cabby, I figured that the plastic end that fits over the ball joint had worn so I ordered a new one and fitted it.

The rod is still popping off so it must be the metal ball that has worn down it is on the side that controls first and second and reverse gear as when it pops off I can only get 3,4and 5th.

Has anyone experienced this before and can anyone tell me the part name or no as I am really struggling to find it
Thanks
Luke

I think it's the selector lever from what I have seen on diagrams

There should be a little plastic tab/clip which needs closing once the rod is on, a little grease on the ball can also help.
Do you also have a felt /foam gasket fitted on to the ball?

You can see the gasket here, is there much play in the plastic bushes as it may be worth changing them as well?
Not 100 % sure if it will stop your problem but VW must of put them on for a reason, just be very careful putting the gaskets on as I ripped one of mine when I replaced mine last year.
