Sorry I'm no help as I have the same problem with mine. It is a 4 speed. So hopefully someone will cure two problems.

Well if you got a 4spd kit for a 5spd then that is the issue as a 5spd don't work on a 4, and a 4spd don't work on a 5.

Have a read through this lot, there's a section on the gap you need underneath the car when setting up the gearstick. There's a few pages to look through.

Although not my post. The OP did not put which box they had so I didn't know if they were aware. My 5 speed kit went fine. I followed the 4 speed set up more than once, looks like I'll be doing it again, but it still doesn't gel right.

Hi
Sorry its a 5 speed box, i think its more to do with the clutch cable the rubbers are missing where its attached to the gear box end and there's loads of play in it and when its held straight it selects 1st ok ive ordered all the clutch to lever parts see if that cures it
Thanks Chris

The clutch may be causing problems but the engine settles and moves on its mounts over the years in conjunction with the gear shift.

You've replaced the gear selectors and now its out of alignment and out of alignment with the as new factory measurements. It ends up being a trial and error exercise to set it back up again.
