MK1 cabriolet. Weber 32/34

IMG-20220709-WA0000.jpg Hi all,
..  Yep premium fuel only in use..👍
…am now looking at replacing the following.
In tank fuel pick up Sender
Or
Fuel tank
..problem chased back thus far…
New fuel pump
Fuel pipes
Ignition coil
HT leads
Dizzy checked No hairline cracks. 👍
Engine mounted fuel pot  /return replaced
Breather pipe cleared ?? Is there another ?
Fuel lines blown through..
Tank magnet swept and
Sender checked. (Pick up pipe catching debris*)

Carb rebuild and in chamber filter deleted for an external …( Yes I have still got 2 filters) due to the one under carb getting twisted every time replaced.. twisting that tiny filter restricted fuel into carb.
Good points..
It sounds sweeeeet! .
.idle 400/600
This weather minimum choke start get it 900
Warming then push it in.
Off I hop !!
….
This has helped so far.
..tank fuel cap opened occasionally as it stalled on me I would let out the vaccuum ..starts again .
.
I saw lack of fuel arrive at pre filter to pump….
So I'm expecting the in tank sender (not a pump mine is not GTi,) to be failing?
I'm going to try an emergency fuel cap..
(Push in type ) so thinking it can breath removing the vaccum!??…
If so will change filler cap
Yes when on return from test it spluttered uphill then stalled .   It is being choosy where it goes now. :)
Crank bit of Choke to encourage 1000 rpm
Selecting 1st gear go to pull away blip revs
Tries to move 3 metres and dropped revs to stall
2nd go let it cool 5/10 mins reversed car to facing down hill then tried to find way home without hills…
9 stalls later.. 6mile arrived home.
Switched off.
Started on button.
Reversed same stall (limp mode)
2nd reverse sorted minimal choke again..
Fuel tank sender inspection tomorrow

Any thoughts please
Kangaroo fuel is not nice behaviour but I EXPECT the odd bounce and overrun sound of it as the age and mechanism of early set up
..fuel return to tank good when running.
Pre carb filter full when running
It's got to be vaccum buil up in tank or fuel line blockage/sender blockage no???
.help.
Pics are fuel tank lid invert
Fuel pick up pipe full length (cleaned)
Pick up pipe has now had end cut so it is not capped it's pure Straw pipe like .. see the filaments sticking out pick up..
Dirt flakes
Paint primer flakes
Rust
Possible filler sludge .
So ..as above new sender or tank refurb?
Or maybe new filler cap ?

You should have a vented fuel cap on a carb car to stop the build up of pressure in the tank and the fuel is used,. fuel injection cars have a none vented cap.

Also try and restrict the fuel return pipe to see if that helps, lots of info on here and the web about this..

Idle speed seems to low at 400/600, it should be around 950 rpm.

What colour are the spark plugs after a good run?
Black to rich, very light grey to lean.

To increase the idle speed turn the idle speed screw clockwise once the engine is warm, blip the throttle a couple to times to see where it settle.

Picture here of idle where it is.

IMG-20220718-WA0008.jpg Apologies rpm was 900/950 as mentioned
Sorry it was 400 when stalling last month 🤣🤦
Update it failed small hole at fuel tank neck.
So its new tank

The neck is not held by any more than filler possibly.
I wish I never skipped that bit …if it was pointed out..🤦 Bolts present ..nuts disentergated .
Tank is drained.
Awaiting a parts list and getting the list right 👍
