Fuel sender cap removal

I seen a few threads about removing the fuel sender cap, two things I'm not clear on, which way to undo and is it threaded or just a locked?

gonna have to turn it in direction of Zu   Auf (on),  try a flat bar that fits between opposite slots and turn with spanner. you could try softly tapping with hammer but more likely to damage plastics.
soak and clean area first,.you dont want that dirt entering fuel system

I used the handles on my water pump pliers, with them upside down, and apply  downwards pressure and very very gently start to undo. Don't forget there's a rubber seal underneath that is also probably stuck after being there so long.

I would seriously wait until warmer weather before attempting it. They are basically unobtainable, and the chance of breaking it is much higher when its cold.

So clockwise to release? Any easier way of draining the fuel  tank?

Similar to Vic I've got a pair of tin snips with longish handles that fit in the slots when laid across them.

I've also seen it done (googled but couldn't find any pics) with various socket set extenion bars and someone made a tool of wood off cuts that fits into the slots.

I suggest a through and through cleaning of the Cap area and the cap itself……The use a tooth Brush to clean the outer lip of the cap out so you don't forget the goo that can be there.  When that is finished and looks really really clean, Spray the outer cap lip with wd-40 to get the inside seal to loosen a wee bit.  I have also had to use a plastic putty knife to gently (GENTLY) to push on the seal (ROUND THE CORNERS OF THE PUTTY KNIFE To Prevent possible slicing….then respray the WD-40 and let it work for an hour….  I suggest that having a beer after cleaning the thing, then using the WD-40 Helps you in timing and as a weak Analgesic….

Only Attempt this in a WELL VENTED AREA.  As this is a unported Cap, then draining the cap is from the bottom fuel line.  (remove the Fuel Cap on the fender.).

pretty sure mine came of off with anticlockwise turn by about 25 degrees.
I knocked it round very softly and carefully with a very blunt chisel.

"Zu - Auf" translates as "closed - open".
So it goes anti-clockwise to remove it.
