What car you got? Carb or fuel injection?
Does your friend not know what a fuel gauge look like?

Is your main pump noisier than before? There is a lift pump inside the fuel tank with a filter on the end if you are lucky then the filter may be blocked or the lift pump has burnt out, there is also a little filter just before the main pump in the fuel line underneath the car.
How old is your main fuel filter in the engine bay?
Injections cars reallly don't like being run out of fuel and it's best to keep them no lower than 1/4 tank as the lift pump is cooled by the petrol.
Lift pump can be got at from a hole just below the rear seat, if you need help or advice on getting it out let me know.
Filter lives here.

It may be worth changing the main fuel filter in the engine bay, they are meant to be changed every 20,000 miles or 2 years and who knows what's been sucked through yours when the petrol ran out.
There so 2 types depending on age of car, cars from1985ish have a bigger fuel filter like mine.
It's also worth fitting some new copper washers, 1 end is the same size as sump plug washer and the other end is slightly smaller but sometimes you get 1 with the filter then match up a new washer in a shop.
