Faulty speedo/mileage/Trip - 1989 Clipper

Help and advice required please!

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. I picked up a Mk1 Clipper today which has been well restored and is in good order. Its a 1989 model with 120,000 on the clock.

I decided to press the trip on the dash literally within 2 miles of driving it and then I noticed when I got home that I had only travelled 1 mile. The trip had stopped at 0009 just before the 1 would click up.

Anyway, this bugged me as well as concerned me so I took it back out for a 20 mile drive, the same kept occurring. I reset the trip on 7 different occasions and all this did was pop a mile on the main mileage each time but the trip re-locked every single time at 0009.

I guess if I remove the dash, clocks etc…this could be fixed but I'm concerned now about the genuine miles on the car, I feel a bit of a t**t not checking this when I inspected the car.

The trip prior to me setting it had 200 plus miles on it so it had been working in some fashion.

Could anybody offer any advice on this matter. Many thanks, Craig.

Yes easy fix but you do need remove the instruments to get to the back of the speedo.
What's happening is the drive cog is slipping on the shaft and that is why the miles don't count up after .9 and only works when you reset the miles.
You many find it will go past .9 and stop at 9.9 etc…. You need to remove the cog and super glue it on.

Ill try and find the guide on the internet for you.

There was a much better guide but can't find it at the moment????

Thanks Mark, I really appreciate that bit of info. Do you think, given the trip had a reading of around 200 miles on it, the problem only occurred as a result of me pressing the trip button to reset it?

If this is the case then I can feel more confident in the mileage on the clock.

All the best,
Craig.

I would not of thought you caused the problem by pressing the reset button.
When mine started to do it it would work fine sometimes and other times I had to keep pressing the button every .9 of a mile to get the miles to move, you will find it stops your main mileage reading also working.
It's a bit of a faff getting the instruments out buy start by removing the radio as that gives you good access to the screws and plugs.
As yours is a new car to you make sure you have the radio code if it has one as its best to disconnect the earth to the battery when unpluging electrical contacts.

The issue with the odo reset,  I have learned that over the years they changed from metal Drive to Plastic Drive gears.

Never Reset the Trip ODO when you are in Motion.

You can break teeth off the red drive gear or break it loose from the shaft.

If you broke the Teeth, which would cause the main to act the butt, I think that it is but loose on the shaft and that the minimal torque that is required to move of the 9 is causing it to slip. Remove the gear from the shaft,  using a single drop of super glue on a cleaned shaft, and replacing the gear is the usual fix.  If you are missing teeth, then gear replacement is warranted.

There are plenty of companies selling replacement speed-0-gears, they are a few dollars, euro's, pounds…..

The key is NEVER EVER NEVER RESET your TRIP ODO when in MOTION.

(My daughter had a habit of breaking about 4 of them in her Saturn.)….After I had her assist in the removal of the thing, she stopped doing it.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Faulty speedo/mileage/Trip - 1989 Clipper

Given the age and mileage of the car I would not be too concerned with this. It important the car is in good order and able to be maintained to a good standard. As for the trip counter I would invest in a new clock. If you can find one with lower mileage the you could do the drill in the back approach to wind it up until it matches - if you have the patience.
