Engine leak

Hi

I was getting the driver side tyres changed and noticed a leak, I know it's not the best angled photos but any ideas what this could be? It was pretty thick residual.

Could be but no limited to.

Cam Seal, Main engine Seal, Intermediate Shaft seal, Or Valve cover seal.

Replace the Valve cover seal first as it is the easiest to replace. Valve covers if over tightened leak from the rear.  If it is twisted (doesn't lay flat on a table but rocks) leaks at the corners and down the block.

Replace the gasket with new, only RTV (even the g60 gasket change) at the corners of the Cam seal where the seal goes fro the head over the cam at the front.   1drop each side. only to seal the Cork to the Cam at the corner.  You also do this to the Rubber one piece gasket.

Tighten the nuts to 87 in/lbs no more no less, less or more will cause the gasket to fail.

I think I have pinpointed where the leak is coming from. Not sure what that part is?

In the 1st picture the plastic flange is for coolant to the heater.

 In the last picture there should be a plug/dust cover in the middle of the gearbox timing cover.

Thanks for the reply - it was the water flange that needs changing, i have ordered the part. Also found another leak in a pipe that goes into the the thermostat (that controls the heat inside the car. It basically exploded whilst driving today and i had smoke coming out everywhere!

Neither of those parts will be the cause of an oil leak. The only way you'll really be able to trace it is to clean it all thoroughly and then keep checking it. Oil can get blown around making it seem like it's coming form somewhere it isn't.

Thanks mate, you raise a valid point. The water flange and pipe is a separate issue ON TOP of the oil leak

I've ordered the parts and in the meantime I will give it a good clean and try to determine where it's coming from. Thanks

Keep an eye out for Metal outlet flanges, and t-stat covers as I hate plastic part check ebay and Facebook market place as they all come up for sale now and then..
