Dashboard plastic coating peeling

Post

Hi all, so after my car languishing at the bodyshop for a year with no work while they cleared their huge backlog of work due to covid lockdowns and covid stricken staff my car is now moving forward at rapid pace! I have a slight problem with my dashboard, the plastic coating was peeling up around the windscreen vents (common problem) which was fixed with the inserts, but its also peeling back along the back edge or the dash. Any suggestions as to the best glue/adhesive/whatever to use and best method to apply and hold in place while drying? I have attached an image of the peeling. Thanks in advance for any and all advice/suggestions  20221218_174308.jpg

I would try some "Contact adhesive" and hold it all in place with a bunch of bulldog clips 👍🏽

Well you could try that, but some one was making Vent
covers that hid that.

When I have done that, you have to make the vinyl pliable as it can get brittle.  I cleaned the edges and used Gorilla glue , as it expands 3 times its size when wet, use as little of a bead underneath.  then fold over and clamp I used a bunch of 2 inch spring clamps and wood, to increase the space between clamps.  I also applied the glue to the under belly of the dash.  For the really brittle areas I wiped with wd-40 on the top of the vinyl for a couple of days and also used my 3 500 watt quartz halogen work lights to warm the vinyl.

With all older vinyl it can get brittle and crack when you bend it…but heat and the wd-40 work well to sort of making it pliable.

I have also seen cars where the owners had them recovered in leather, and or Pleather.. who ever the upholster was did a wonderful job.
