Can anybody tell me what the brown and white wire with a very small push on connecter by the rear passenger lights does

I've changed my rear lights for clear but know my brake lights aren't working could this brown/White have something to do with it !!!!!!!!    Help 

Is it a single wire or two wires ?
Could be the rear washer pump connector, which side is it on when viewed from the rear of the car?

sounds like the numberplate lights from your description, or possibly boot light
