Fuel pump issue?

Hi all, after bringing my 1989 cabby gti out of winter storage I found that it had a buzzing, whinny noise somewhere around the fuel tank. So it must be a fuel pump I reckon? The noise doesn't change pitch with various revs. However, pushing up on the fuel tank from under the car stops the whinning? Could this be the in tank pump? Cheers. Chris.

Thanks for the link. I've read it through and it is the in tank pump making the noise. I know this because the noise stopped when I disconnected it. Anyone got an answer to why the buzzing stops when I push up the petrol tank?

Because usually it is the main pump that whines because it has to overwork, and likes to complain.

The issues are that the "in-tank" pump when it fails because of blockages in the inlet because the filter screen falls off, or that you run the car on less than 1/2 to 1/4 tank and just drop a couple of pounds of fuel in it… Burns it up, as it uses the fuel as a lubricant an a cooling agent to keep it running.

Other issue with the fuel pump is that the interconnect vibration dampner/hose gets weak and either holes itself or becomes so bad that the in-tank pump falls off and hits the bottom of the tank and vibrates like Hades on the tin.

You need 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank to open the inspection port under the seat, and I have a couple of tricks to keep the filter on as you worm the new pump in to the tank.

I had already found your excellent write up on the in tank pump replacement. It's examples like yours that make the internet such a great invention. A big thank you for that. When I posted this thread, I hadn't discovered which pump was at fault? Now I know and I'll be using guide to change the intank pump.
Cheers. Chris.
