Has anyone removed the alternator bracket on a 1.8 8v carb engine mine needs a new alternator but po has rounded off the allen bolt.
I have removed the three bracket bolts and no joy. Also removed top cam cover and crankshaft pulley to undo the allen bolt behind that lower cover still wont come off.

Either way it is going to be a pain.
Typical non a/c mount.
Which is also the typical a/c bracket mount.
While if you have space, which is going to be tight, you might try to get a ratcheting spanner in there.
30 is the bolt you are referring to?
This shows you the a/c bracket which also holds the water pump's lower 2 block bolts.
This is the bolt?
Not a lot of clearance.
I have heard of folks using a larger TORX bit, and hammering it in. But that is part of the issue.
I would spray the front and back of the bolt and down the middle with PB.Blaster.
I would use a Hammer and pry or SCrewdriver to drive the alternator to the front of the bracket, same as you would do on removal, that may free the Bushing up and allow you to Pivot the alternator up and down to remove stress on the bolt.
I have hear of folks "Welding" a Sacrificial allen socket on that sucker as well.
If there was enough room my Tried and True, easiest way to remove a rounded or Stripped bolt, are a reversible Drill, (they make them with 90 degree heads now. ) and Left-Handed Drill Bits.
Insert a bit that is big enough to cut the head off, and put it in reverse, and it will usually cut then bind, and back that bolt out quicker than you would believe.
You could drill it out, or try to cut a slot in it, but again that is a very tight area….
You could destroy the Alternator, then you can get it out of your way to use Vice-Grips on the bolt…
That is Cut the Alternator off the bolt with a Dremel and a cutting wheel.
I have also heard of folks using a hack saw and cutting the front and back edges of the alternator through the bolt. Kind of like the rear lower shock mount.
Worst case is either Loosing the engine to Raise it, and get you the clearance to get on the head of that bolt.
Two words of advise for going back.
Never-Seize.

Number 20, This bushing has to be knocked towards the fender, and that is what is binding the Alternator, and if it hasn't been moved in a while can rust bind the Allen.
You can see the distance that the bushing goes in as you tighten the allen, and you can see why you have to smack it back to the fender to ease removal or replacement.
To totally remove it and clean it you have to press or bang it out.
I usually remove the bushing, clean it and the Bracket, then Coat it with never-seize.
I suspect you are going to have to Loosen your Drivers and Passenger side mounts to canter the engine to effect repair.
