Engine noise

Hi,

1.6 Gti engine EG prefix

Engine had not been used for considerable time prior to
fitting.

Has done only about 60 miles since 2011

When engine is started from cold there is a top end 'rattle' for about a second or less which then disappears.
Only happens when engine started from cold or left standing for a coupe of hours.

This didn't happen when we first got the engine started but has started since a few miles have been put on the clock

Oil pressure is good on gauge. Oil light goes out when cranking engine and stays on a few seconds after engine stops.

No indication of 'big end' noise.

The oil in the engine is a fully synthetic one which I think is SAE 10-40

The owners manual recommends SAE 20-50

I eliminate the problem by simple starting the engine, immediately switching off and re-starting.

Many idea what it may be and am I using the wrong engine oil?

Other that this the engine is sort on. runs really well.

Thanks

To me yes, a car that has had DIno oil in it from the start, shouldn't be converted to Synth unless you have flushed the system…

Synth oil is thinner and starts to clean things up, doing this will cause noises and leaks in my experience with synth oil in the 70's (yep used jet aircraft oil (similar to mobile 1) in my 76 Toyota….. Car only had about 15K on it when I switched it over.

Little 4 bangers I have owned I have always used 10w40 in the winter and 20w50 in the summer.  Since I have moved to the South I use 20W50 year around.

While it would be easy for me to say it is hydraulic lifter noise noticed at startup with dirty lifters they have to build up oil pressure and usually quiet down when they get warm and the oil can seep in to the gummy things.
I don't know if you have a hydraulic head.

If it is lifter noise on a non-hydraulic head, then you may need to adjust your lifters by shimming them.

What I will tell you for a fact that many a sporadic issue
with oil can be attributed to improper Viscosity of the oil and a Generic/Store Branded/Bosch or Fram filter.

Good filters known not to cause issues are:
Mann
Mahl
Wix
STP
Mobile1
Genuine VW.

Others with more knowledge on non-Digi engines will probably be more of help to you.

And my Bias of Synth-vs-Dino is my honest opinion, as others have different views than mine.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Many thanks for that.
I will change the oil to the recomended viscosity and let you know.

The engine runs well soon as started and the noise goes so I hope the oil change does the trick.

Your advice really helpful

Thanks again
