Why buy a Campaign over a late series 2 GTI?!

Reading through all this, I was beginning to get a little worried…
Mk1, Mk2's, diesels, caddys and NOWHERE was the good old CABBY mentioned.  :(

ARE YOU LOT SECRETLY STARTING AN ANTI CABBY MOVEMENT???

Faith was restored by walt wading in with another of his lame threats that he issues to all and sundry… and then never turns up to make good on cause its RAINING/ COLD/ SALTY (insert your own excuse here!).

As above I'm with a good well used motor, one thats been looked after and used for the purpose it was designed for… DRIVING not sitting in a garage half the year.

Just thought I would compliment rajan's mint series 1

Series 1s are rarer than any other mk1 whether it be a GTI or not, Series 1 in black are the way forward!!!!

Hmmmm black series one gti   Stop it you're teasing me!

I think these pictures are evidence that black is the coolest mk1 colour. Case closed. 8)

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

When I originally sought my own Mk1, I wasn't actually after a Campaign, just a red 1800, I didn't (ahem!   ) discover it was a Campaign until quite a long time afterwards.

I guess the Campaign Register (and hence this site) was instrumental in raising the profile of the Campaign over the rest of the range, perhaps unfairly. As Rajan points out, they aren't particularly rare because :

A: They are well kept by enthusiasts and generally have been throughout their lives.

B: They had the benefits of rust protection and wheel arch liners etc, plus they are the youngest of the range.

I think they are a little special in that they are top spec mk1 tintop you could buy at the time, but probably don't really deserve the price hike that comes with the territory.

Bottom line. If you really want a Campaign for whatever reason, you'll pay for it. If you're not bothered, get a decent 1800 and enjoy!

It would have been different if VW had dropped a 16v in there along with rear disks…. now that would be a special edition! Ho hum!

Cheers.

Drew.

Drew in point B you say that campaigns have added rust protection. What standard rust protection have campaigns got over late series 2's like mine?

I agree with you and Paul C if VW had made an even sportier model of the mk1 GTI, theses models would hold the highest premium. That's the general rule of thumb for all makes and their models.

Hey whats the fighting for, I have a Cabby, but think the tin top is great….I would like one also.

What we should be proud of is the number of people willing to keep the MK1, in all its forms, alive.

I know this isn't the greatist car example ever but i just read that the Marina/Ital register has contacted the DVLA to find only 600 cars left on there books!!!!!

Now thats a car almost in extingtion…. lets keep the MK1 from this fate

I just put this on the other mines better than your thread, we have more registered on this site alone :D

Golf GTI Cabriolet 1990 Helios Blue - gone

Audi A4 1.9TDI - Gone :(

Golf GTTDI MK5 140…..oooh quick….but not a MK1  ;)

None - I think Y reg and onwards came with plastic front wheelarch liners. Mine (X reg) doesn't have them, but then its had new front wings so it might be they were just missed out, when it was worked on.

Kins, maybe its just the way you do it that means yours rusts more than anyone elses???

Oh and if you think you're going to wear yours out at a high rate, then spend weeks taking it apart into thousands of little pieces on your drive then putting it back together again, then do a few more miles and break another part, then spend another couple of weeks ripping it apart and cobbling it all back together - step aside young one, cos I'm the best at that!!!

I agree with kins,i've owned four mk1s in the past series 1and 2.Never had a campaign because one in the condition that i wanted never turned up at the right time.
Its like you said it depends what look your after and i think people are less likely to modify campaigns which probably helps to hold their value.I have a y reg non sunroof model and its the best i've owned, although i think condition of any mk1 is more important than year.
Wish i still had my black 1979 Treg (4speed)………didnt realise just how rare it would be!

Mk1 vs Mk2 8v/16v

Why do I prefer the Mk2?  Well I feel that it is better as an all round car.  It performs just as well as the Mk1 in the performance and handling stakes, but is refined enough to use as a daily drive ? what more could you want?  However, I think that the Mk1 is a better car if you want a weekend car ;)

I disagree with the comment on the handling. To most people the mk2 seems as good as the mk1 if not better because its a more reassuring chassis and many mk1's are not set up for optimum handling. If you get a well sorted mk1 it is more capable than a mk2, its just a lot more work

I was referring to the standard set-up on both Mk's.  I do know what you mean though as I have a Lhasa Green Campaign which has Koni Shocks and although it has sat in the garage for 5 months waiting for me to get it MOT'd and sorted - which I have almost done.  It was my first Mk1 and after driving it for a couple of weeks it will be up for sale - I really want to keep it but with 3 GTI's and a Mk5 on the way, I don't have the space or money

However, I am probably going to sell my G60 Syncro next year and the Mk1 Series 1 - esp Rajan's black one - look irresistable.  But it would be my 2nd main car along with the Mk5 - would that be fair to a 28 year old car?

Where does this leave people like me who have campain spec mk1's that arn't actually campaign's ?. Mine's llhsa green has green tinted windows ,  had the twin lamp grill ,pirelli p's and a sunroof (wish i'd joined this site before buying my mk1 because i'd have looked for a non-sunroof model) but because these were mostly added on after the initial sale by previous owners my mk1 is not worth as much even though it was by far the best one i could find it cost me ?900 and the campain i looked at before was a rot box for ?1200 , so as usual i guess it just comes down to the value we put on a car .People who know their stuff know a campain is just clever marketing but to someone outside of mk1 circles think that they are the ones to go for . As long as you like the car who cares how much you pay . Would you pay more for a black or helios blue mk1 versus say a red or white one in identical condition ?

And personnally i think non campain's look smaller you decide.

And i love my mk2 but my mk1 out shines it everytime - even before i molested it .

Exactly! It doesn't matter if you own a Golf Mk1 and its worth ?100 or ?10,000, so long as you enjoy ownership. The monetary value only affects people who buy and sell cars.

Well, I'm a Campaign owner so not completely unbiased I have to admit   .

When looking for a Mk1 though I didn't really know much about Campaign's - I just went for the first decent condition one I found, which happened to be a Campaign.

I'm probably in a minority but I actually prefer the twin lamp grille on the Mk1 and the sunroof helps to alleviate the softtop addiction now that I no longer have am MX-5 companion for the Mk1. I also think the 14 inch P slots fill out the arches better than the 13 inch standard alloys, although I know the design is not to everyones taste.

I don't really understand the premium placed on them over other S2 cars though, and certainly would have gone for a "vanilla" S2 Mk1 if one in good condition had come up first.

As a daily driver I like the low down torque of the 1800 and the extra rust protection over an S1 makes for a better all year round daily driver.

I think in an ideal world I would have an early 4 speed swallowtail 1.6 in black nestling in the driveway next to an Atlas Grey Campaign

I do think the later S2 cars look better in the metallic colours though.

Its fairly safe to say, that all Mk1 owners are generally happy with 'their' car, however they came across it. Some, like kins and I, had a specific variant in mind and went to seek out a particular colour/age; others didn't. But we've all ended up with a good car-owner relationship out of it.

Owners of more modern cars often say, when prompted "I don't know much about cars, so I just bought it cos there was good finance/insurance deal/saw it/dad/colleague had one/goes from A-B/etc" and are only moderately happy with it, if at all. And others succumed to glamorous advertising and the car's not met their expectations. My neighbours have a Peugeot 307 and they think its terrible (quality issues), for example.

I prefer the twins!  8)

I think my preference comes down to watching the mk1 and mk2s when I was learning to drive. All the GTIs had twin headlamps, it's sort of burned into my brain!

My first mk1 1.1c had GTI wheels and a hella twin headlamp grille. Minus about 60 bhp though….

Totally agree with you there, more aggressive/racey look. Haven't you just bought a Campaign (with twin lights) though
