Right then 'How did you get in to Volkswagens'

Well back 15 years my 1st car was an 83 xr3i (Brings back the memories), then had an austin ambassador, beautiful car very comfy.
Moved house and noticed a 85 1.8gt Scirocco mint car on the street, i knocked on his door to say hello, saying i'd just moved on the street and also mentioned for a laugh if he whenever he wanted to sell the car i am always interested.
5 years later it is offered to me for ?250, what a buzz, that was it! vw for me always.
After this i had an 89 mk2 for 5 years then picked up an 86 mk2 gl with 43,000 this is now back to mint condition and in lock up.
So had to look for another and wondered why so many people said get a mk1.
I did and will never looked back, best fun, doesnt have the space the mk2 has especially with kids in the back but hey who cares when i can enjoy my driving more and fling it round the bends
I find that they are easy to look after and so much can be done if you plan on modding the cars

When I was about 13 ish there were two guys in our street with vw`s, one had 2 mk1 scirocco`s and the other had a mk1 driver and a peppermint green cab, thats what first sparked my interest.
my first car after passing my test was a 1000cc W reg mini, followed by an 88 Ax Gt which was nippy and somehow not as much fun as the mini. When it came time to change the Ax it was either Pug 205 Gti or Mk1 Gti.  Looked at Mk1`s for ages and ended up doing a bizzarre  swap, where I had a yellow 80, small rear light mk1 with an re 1900 engine prepped for rallying with full cage, buckets, sump guard etc, another guy had my Ax and the golf guy had a Pug 405 from the guy who had my Ax!!
The Mk1 had a legacy of bodges and had really been spoilt by the owner I got it from, and I was too inexperianced to save it, it ended up going back to the person who`d originally built it in exchange for work on subsequent mk2 Gti`s… That was up to about 98/99 since then thee have been so many I couldn`t list them all, highlights for me have been a 86 D reg Turbo Technics 8v mk2 gti which was an awesome car, a  91 H reg Capri green jetta Gti (J Lo), decked with a bit of stereo and some nice wheels and a K reg black Polo G40, so unasuming, but what a weapon, chipped and pulleyed etc to 144bhp at the fly. As I write this the collection reads like this;

82 X Mk1 Gti White needs lots of bits but is solid
82 Y Mk1 Gti White getting 16v`ed as we speak
86 C Scirocco Gtx factory Recaro interior
88 F Caddy in black a project yet to be started
86 D mk2 Gti 16v Black donor for the Mk1 conversion
89 G mk2 Gti 16v Black came with the D plater, a donor for?
89 G mk2 gti 16v Black in storage for 2 yrs awaiting 16vt conversion
90 H Jetta TDI donor for the Caddy
90 H mk2 Gtd donor for the Caddy, 1 too many donors for the Caddy!?
90 H mk2 Gti 8v White rescued from an abusive owner, now being broken
91 J mk2 Gti 8v Met Black, 92k, do I put the 16vt in this or the 89 16v? i just can`t decide………….

Thats it for now, off to do some work on the Mk1 16v conversion.

I saw a mk1 when I was 15 (9 years ago) and knew I had to have one. I loved the retro look of it. No other cars look as good. I finally got my first car last year. A 1982 black GTI tin top 1600. I'm starting to learn that its en expensive business…I worked out the other day that since owning the car (1 year and 3 months) I have spent over ?3000!!! a Grand of that was getting the interior re trimmed though!  8)

Got into VW's for many different reasons.

The first car I can remember my dad having was a silver V reg 1.6 GTi. I loved it but then he got a white Y reg 1.8 which I loved even more. I did so many miles in the back of that car growing up and it was great. I always remember having a pop at my dad for not replacing his 2-lamp grill witha spot-lamp one but he was having none of it - he preffered a cleaner look. I also remember helping (hindering?) him to re-furb his tred grille surround (Hence thats always the first thing I do when I get a Mk1 GTi…

I also remember going to Aircool near Highbury to pick up the car from servicing with my dad and seeing all the Mk1's and Mk2's they had for sale. Dad always said he wanted to get a Mk2 16v but in the end he got a big promotion so skipped straight to a new Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4    8).

A cousin of mine also owned GTi engineering and was dead into VW's (Still is, though its mostly Audi's now..) and this made my Vdub addiction even worse..

As soon as I was old enough to get my own car I got a Mk1. Now i'm older and (slightly) richer I can induldge myself and own some proper good Mk1's. I've now got two Mk1's (with 4-lamp grills!   ) and they are great. It took a while to get to MK1 GTi's (I've had a Mk1 GLS, 1.5 Cabby. Jetta GTi 16v, Vento VR6 and Oak Green Mk2 16v) but I got there in the end and am lavishing much time (and too much money!) on them   Here are my current two..

There's my VW life story to date  :D , any comments welcome.

o

Too many to list but 2 x 1982 Golf GTi 1.6 hatches are the main ones

i always remember my cousin had a bit of a shed of beatle when she was 18 (14yrs ago) and i always wondered why she spent so much money on it and all her time, she only sold it to buy her settie when she moved out and has regreated it ever since… its was mint by the time she sold it.

i now no why she did it since owning 3 minis and spending ever spare minuite and penny on them..

but about 2 yrs ago a saw a black mk 1 gti cab parked up and i fell in love and had to have one,
so when my mate said there was a clipper for sale localy quiet cheap i was there changing money before i thought about it.. (never driving one before) i was later to find out it was as flat as a pancake so ive only just had it back from the garage with a big bill but its now runs lovely!! and cant wait to get it out there and show it off… this is the first off many i expect! donna

when i was 10 years old and rember seeing a lasha green (possibly re-sprayed dragon green, i was only 10!!!) weeving in and out of traffic at brake neck speeds 8O   , i rember asking my dad what it was when we later caught it up a traffic lights (speeding get you no where)
a old golf was his reply, i rushed to the shops and bought a copy of "fast car" i think as it happened to have a feature on a owners lasha green mk1 with a G60 conversion. to this day i still have the mag some where wonder if i ever saw the car again :dontknow:

it was 1985 and I'd just moved to Mexico City. Went to school in a Karmann Ghia and my Dad had a Passat (Santana over here) as his company car. When I moved back to the UK in 88 I couldn't help but notice the lack of VW's on the street so embarked on a plan to buy a beetle. Passed my test at 17 and then got hold of a 63 bug which made way for the Mk1 7 years ago. In between I had a number of vans, Mk2's and a Mk4 150pd. Also had a Variant for a while, but my most desired (after the Mk1 of course) is the Brazilia. One day I will get one bought over from Mexico……one day !!!!!!!! Having thought about it, i was subjected to VW's slightly earlier as my uncle used to hill climb lots of different variations of the beetle in the late 70's. I'll have to go an dig some pics out now…….
