number plates

i've seen a set of number plates on  another mk1 in the same style as as pair of german plates, the only differance being the front one is white and the rear one is yellow. my question is how legal are these and where can i get a good set made up for a reasonable price?

Anything other than UK font is illeagal.

You can get pressed alluminium plates with UK font from places like dubmeister that are legal.

How many more times are we going to go over this subject there ILLEGAL. Police will stop you fine you and find other things wrong with your Golf worst case even find a fault that would get the vehicle Prohibited (PG9) from the road canceling the MOT. Don't do it !!

Yes, don't do it, and also don't modify your car in any way from manufacturers standard without telling your insurance either because that is bad too. The police would much rather pull you up for having euro style plates than bother with the countless number of people that mess about with the spacing on thier plates and stick black dots on them to make words. Though saying that, we run said german style plates and have done for a while on our daily driver and we live near a police headquarters and have had no trouble  :D

Just buy the legal ones that I posted a link to.

the front should always be white and the rear yellow.
as long as the font is correct and they dont display a 'D' on the blue bit on the left hand side instead of 'GB', they are legal. in my opinion, they look loads better than our poop english ones.

I dont see why people are so bitter towards modifying cars? or people asking the same old questions. not everyone is on here all the time. just answer the question with out the attitude.

As modifications go, its a rubbish one - it doesn't make the car any faster, and the looks are subjective. It doesn't look "German", because to look german would need the German font, spacing, emissions/tax stickers (or is it insurance), white at the rear and possibly the D symbol. And even then, the letters/numbers combination means the German spacing doesn't make sense on a UK plate. So what does it look like? A mush up of the 2 scheme, neither one nor the other.

It would be much more clever to do subtle mods which improve the car AND stay within the law.

well mine is legal and looks better. it definately looks more german than the plastic english ones. and they are stronger and last longer.
a good mod doesn't have to make the car faster.
i got my car resprayed. great mod, no increase in power.
i got a laminated windscreen, again, great modification with no impact on the power.

these cars look good standard and in my opinion, look better with some subtle tastefull modifications.
changing the number plate is a cheap and easy way to make it look better.

this guy asked for some advice, is it so hard to be polite and give him your answer?

We was given 100% spot on advice 10 minutes after he posted, on a question which has been asked 1000000 times and is easily found out by searching the forum. I'd say he got off reasonably lightly!

:banghead: can we make a sticky about this, fairly sick of it coming up every week.

my point exactly. he got great advice so why bother with the spitefull answer? i think it is not in the slightest bit helpful.
maybe he was on his phone when he posted and doesn't have the time, battery or credit to go trawling through previous topics? give him the benifit of the doubt. he is obviously not on here very often. make him feel welcome at least.

i have asked questions on here after searching but gave up on the answer because all i got were pointless 'answers'.
like my question ''will my 100mph speedo break if i go 140mph?''.
i have passed my test and i know the speed limits in this country thankyou. it is a yes or no answer.
i'm going to find out the hard way. germany has autobahns.

it just gets to me.
can you see where i am comming from?

a sticky would solve the problem X.
simple and constructive post right there.

The only problem I've found with my pressed metal plates is stone chips, they've dented my plate which looks a little rough but it comes with driving them I suppose

If you are wanting that true German look then why don't you go the whole hog and get the steering wheel put on the other side as well
It makes me wonder if German owners of say Aston's go for English looking German plates????

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

The rules on font/spacing/reflective/BSAU145D kitemark aren't age-related. The only thing that is, is black & white plates are allowed on pre 1973 (I think its 1973?) and original plates are allowed if the car is old enough and has original plates which were not retroreflective in the same way as modern acrylic ones. If you replaced the plates, you're not allowed to fit these, you'd be forced to comply with the regs of today.

Also, the rules are the same for RHD and LHD cars registered in the UK.
