right heres another go then Rajan:
is it what appers to be a brake line sticking out under the car slightly (as of course on early cars these were run inside the car)
-somthing to do with the rear badge possibly :dontknow:
- its not the head rest's as they were a rare option on the swallowtails, standard on gti's :dontknow:

I can spot:
lowering
non-standard wheels
no rear wiper
no rear boot lock
no plastic trim on arches
possibly, later dash???
also, isn't that car in Mars Red No.2, an earlier car would be Mars Red No.1 (distinctly 'orange') or if really early, Senegal Red.
Didn't mention the boot lock, so take a point.
Can't really make out the dash.
Difficult to say on colour, it is so much affected by the ability to reproduce it on a screen, plus red likes to fade. It's No.2 that is the orangey one.
Keep 'em coming! It's something unique to early cars that I see clearly.

Perhaps that it doesn't have a heated rear windscreen?
i orginaly thought this was on only very early cars like 75' but have seen newer 77/78 cars without the heater element so take that this is a factory option again :dontknow:

flag mirros, metal bumpers were on the early cars so it cant be that,
the chrome trime in the windows seals was not on all early cars so cant be that either

Complete spoof - is it that on earlier LHD models the exhaust was on the right? On the aircooled VWs the exhaust tended to be on the opposite side..
Are the rear badges on the wrong sides? :dontknow:

I think this could take quite some time.
I think dubboy is winding us up and there isn't a 'giveaway feature'.

I know i said i'm not playing anymore but… rear lock don't count as its a modification, that could be on any age of golf (how can that give the age away ), i'm not a saw loser honest,

Doesn't look like a brake line to me, more like rear gearbox mount bracket or something?
Rear badge is OK for a '76.
Headrests standard.

Non chrome window seals, flags and bumpers?
All OK for a GTi

Could be, but I think I can just make out the top corners. All GTis have heated rear window.

I think it is the badges at the rear - the early ones were metal and different script wern't they?
Metal badges with different script ended production in July '75 so plastic is OK for GTis.

Dojo, I really haven't the faintest idea between early and late options, so any guesses from me you'll have to forgive

Exhaust tailpipes always finished on the left side, for LHD and RHD
The badges swapped sides in August '75, so again OK.

Side stripes and rear hatch graphics? Non chrome trim.
The side stripes were smooth until 1982 when they became grained, but I can't see that 8O
Rear hatch graphics all the same.
No chrome on GTis.
Clue to the one I am thinking of: on the rear of the car.

Early cars have the towing eye built into the bumper, this one doesn't seem to have any, but then again the picture is unclear, it looks like a low-quality pic. Someone's mentioned this already.
the towing eye could easily be missing even if it was a early car as they are a seperate part to the bumper,
is it somthing simple as the style of number plate, that gives away its age ops:

could it be the tow hitch attached to the rear bumper ?
AxlFoley said
or possibly white numberplate light holders?
Well done that man!
It was the black not white number plate bulb holders I was thinking of, but go to top of the class for the missing towing eye on the bumper bracket.
