previous owner may have enquired about its value with them maybe?

you know what these rip off plate places are like, anything to bolster there "supposed" stock list

Besides they cant sell something thats already displayed on a car!

Hang on a moment, do you hold the V5C registration document for that plate?!  If so, only YOU are allowed to sell it.  I don't think you want to be contacting the seller, I think you want to be contacting the Police!

all the appropriate documentation is with the car, and there was definitely something about the number plate so i dunno

the only thing i can think of is the last owner had it up for sale, but im sure that becomes void if the car changes owners

"Definately something"?!

Are you the registered keeper on the registration document or not?  You do have the registration document for the car in your name don't you?

When the tax/SORN has been due for renewal, has the renewal notice come through the post addressed to you?  If so, the car (and therefore the reg plate) is in your name.  If not, then you need to sort it out post-haste or you may end up with a car that has no legitimate identity.  (Nightmare scenario - best avoided!)

How could he tax or insure it then??

there is one sure way to find out, just go through as many speed cameras as you can at high speed, you will soon find out if the reg is yours

to be fair, because i obviously can't register the car in my name until im 17, the car is, by law, my mom's but no one needs to know.. but im guessing if i've got the log book, then the doc is with that

Mate of mine had a note left on his windscreen from a registration plate dealer saying it was worth about ?600 and he could list it with them for free until sold (upon which they would take a percentage of the selling price). He did this but didn't hear any more about it.
I'm guessing similar has happened with a previous owner of your car. A lot of these plate dealers are just brokers rather than owning the plates themselves.

The secretary of state OWNS all number plates and allows them to be displayed on a car

That car is registered to display that plate, nobody else can sell it, as a seller and buyer have to have the certificate of entitlement signed by both parties

there is also an ?80 transfer fee, and a ?25 fee for the buyer to pay to have the certificate of entitlement put in their name

If the plate is already displayed on a car and tranfered to another everything has to be taken to the local DVLA office Log books insurance, mot, tax disc for both doner and receiving car, and the doner then is issued an age related or its "original" reg (if it had one) and the plate cannot be displayed untill all the log books etc are changed into the new details

I recently changed my Corrado`s reg to a "private" one, because my plate was on retention, (not being displayed on a car)  I recieved the certificate in the sellers name, filled my details in, sent it to dvla, recieved it back, signed it again, then sent it back to the seller, who signed it again to relinquish entitlement over to me! who then sent it back to me, i took it to the dvla office and they transfered all the paperwork into this reg and issued new tax disc, new mot and issued certificate so i could get the plates made

So dont sweat it, no one can sell your plate, its not as easy as that or people would sell A 1 and F 1 for 10`s of thousands every week!

I owned J11 UPO (J1 lUPO) for 6 years, but found it on a plate website for sale? Put a call in to buy it and they said that the plate had been sold, which i could have told them.

I think its just a case of listing almost every plate, then when you enqire they say sorry not available would you like this one thats  almost the samen instead.

I would say that someone made an enquiry about selling the plate once and that is enough to get it on the database. Databases of these magnitudes are virtually impossible to keep up to date so until someone asks them to remove it then it will stay on there forever more. My private plate which I bought 4 years ago still shows on some of these databases also.

sorted.. i got a reply from the people and they said that some had enquired about the plate, which has based it on the database.. as Yomp said, so i replied and said that it shouldn't be allowed and asked for them to remove the plate, and its gone 8)
