DSLR camaras

Hi Guys

Just wandering if any of you have got a DSLR camara and which ones would you recommend. I have been wanting one of these now for a while and have got some gift vouchers to spend so gonna get one.

I only have a budget at the moment of around ?350.00, but could maybe wait a bit longer and put cash towards if i can`t get a decent one for that.

I have been looking at the Nikon D60 as seems to be quite good for the money

I would appreciate peoples views and recomendations

Cheers Kenno

Although I dont own a DSLR myself, I know a number of people who have D60's and they seem to be a great entry level camera. you may be able to do better 2nd hand on ebay but if its vouchers youre spending then go for it!

canon 450d. no contest mate. get it with the kit lense then in the next few months look at a 55mm lense for 70 quid.
your looking around the 400-450 mark but having played with them over the last few weeks along side my samsung gx-10 they really are very good.
alot of the professional photographers i know are switching to the 450d for the wedding/ quick pics and keeping their 5d's for studio work.
i'm very tempted to get myself one in the next month or so.

I looked into this for quite a while and took advise from some digi camera mags and went for the Sony a300 all the features + some more than the Canon and Nikon of simular price and spec, but at a better price the pics speak for themselves.

The big 2, Nikon & Canon according to folk in the know very worried as at the moment they are ahead on name only and it may only be a matter of time till Sony (Minolta) as was, takes the top spot for quality mid range DSLRs

this pic was 1 of the 1st I took and just let the camera do the work as i had no idea what i was doing. here are a few i took this last week

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

only issue i have with sony/samsung/pentex cameras is the availability of lenses.

Some good views here, the canon 450d does look very good and reading the reviews seems like the top end of the entry level camaras. But it is slightly out of my budget and really want one now.

I am not going to become a proper photographer with the camara just want to take some half decent pictures, reading about the Nikon it seems to have a motor in the lense rather then in the actual camara is that going to be a problem.

The sony one that you have got A50PY looks rather nice aswell, and is within my budget, not read any reviews on that yet

At the moment it is out of these 3 camaras, reading the reviews i think i would have gone for the canon 450d but it is approx ?150 more then what i really want to spend. Does anyone know the major differences that i will really notice between the 1000d and the 450d.

Novocaine, when you mentioned earlier about the issue with availability of the lenses with the sony what did you mean, and would i really need to buy another lense then the one that comes with each camara.
Also as you can tell i am a novice with camaras, whats the difference between a 18-55mm lense and a 18-70mm lense, will one zoom further then the other

Get d60 its a brilliant camera ideal for an amature (no offence) you can basically put it on simple setting and hand it to a novice or a child and still get an amazing shot, and you can fiddle with apatures and sutter speeds till you go crazy but its done in a really smart easy to understand digital/visual way, also has a built in filter systen so you can get really arty car shots also a good camera for motor sport or sport anything fast moving if your into that. really good camera! Honest you won't be disapointed!

Other lenses come later you probably will never need to change just if you fancy getting a bit 'oooo la la'
Like photos above brilliant quality on a standard lense (i think….. looks like it anyway)

yes basically on the 18-55 18-70 issue. you will find that the 18-55 lense has less destortion at the edges of the picture because the glass isn't having to curve to the same extent. basically making it a better lense.

yes to the needing a new lense you will become bored of the not quite being able to get that shot because your lense is either not wide enough (landscape shots) or not long enough (distant objects.)
these three pics show a good example of this i think. taken whilst in london before christmas the first with a tele lense (50-200) at around focul length 100 ish. the second using the same lense but at 200. and the third with as wider lense as i own which is an 18-55 set around the 20-22 mark.

no single lense wll take these shots. you can see the fairly tight focus in the second shot with the foreground and background bluring. which a single lense won't do.

canon are prolivic with there lenses and they have market share in this area. whilst sony and pentex based lenses are harder to find because they use different fitting types. you become limited as to which makes you can buy and the quility of lense may suffer because of this.

oh and nikon is owned by canon.
and dont go to jessops first. look around and find the cheapest price you can then get them to price match it.
have a look at the likes of pixmania/7dayshop/warehouse express/uk digital.

Novocaine, is live view basically where you get to see the picture on the lcd screen without having to use the view finder.

Hard to make a choice as they all seem quite good

yes it is. but you wont really use it. the screen is great for a quick look after taking the pics and to check the histogram if shooting in raw (which i tend to do unless they are just snaps or trail shots)

if your not planning on getting alternative lenses for it then i whouldn't bother with an slr instead look at the large focul range compacts like the lumix.

I use a Fuji Finepix S9500  I got this as I'm more of a snapper than a photographer it suits me as its a good camera but is also semi automatic and does all the techi bits on its own.

I have a couple of add on lenses a zoom and a wide angle the thing I like most about the camera as the fact that i can take a photo and then really zoom in on the PC with it having so many pixels.

The Sony is basically Minolta so all the lenses that fit Minolta SLRs will fit The Sony which is good because 2nd hand they are quite reasonable.

The live view on the Sony is good because the screen pivots out so if you wish to take pics overhead or down low you don't need to guess as you can see what you are taking, this was one of the features that sold this camera for me.

when i got mine also got hot shoe flash gun low-pro bag and a 70-300 lens good price for the package from Jessops.

the Cannon 450 is without doubt a  very good camera and it was between the Sony and this but the price did it for me and the pivoting screen the spec is when you compare on jessops site very similar.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

No i think i will be adding later with different lenses and i do want an slr over a compact, i want to learn and i think once i get one, i will realise the need for the additional lenses and the places to use them

Thanks Kenno

while your deciding i'm going to railroad this thread. mwah ha ha ha ha. etc

this is the shots from nodnol that those three are from
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=88745&l=7e72f&id=731220548
then some of my more bizzare shots
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4564&l=c7fd8&id=731220548
a few gig shots for the fans
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=67929&l=efcf8&id=731220548

that should have made a bit of a tangent hehe.

i can't shout loud enough for my opinion to matter to much but i'd still take the canon.

yes andy but minolta lenses still arn't as common as canon. they use the pentex fitting i think which is the same as the samsung i use (need to check this not sure i'm right). the other bonus on the canon is the IS lense availability. i beleive the sony has a moving cmos which is not as good as the lense shift method.
i'm not slating your camera here andy i do like the sony and the price makes it a very real purchase and the pop out screen is a good idea.
