Does anyone do motorsport in their MK1?

Just wondered if anyone drives their Mk1 in anger?

I belong to a Motor Sports Association motor club and don't often see Veedubs on events. Loads of RS2000's, Corsas and Novas, etc but hardly any Golfs.

The kinds of events I'm talking about are Autotests and Solo Tests, Trials, Sprints, night scatters, 12 car rallies, were all that is required is membership to an MSA affiliated club and the correct third party insurance (for yourself - not the car), a tank of fuel and maybe a "Clubmans" license.

I'd love to do competitive motorsport with a well sorted Mk1, unfortunately its just so costly. And the age of the car would present problems, eg if you break stuff, sourcing new spares could take months not days. I've done 1 track day in mine, it was well sorted and lasted the day okay. There was talk of a track day outing for the club but it never came about.

and about time…i have been autotesting, trialing and classic trialing my mk1 for a few years now and it is a great little car to use. our motorclub organize a national trial once a year and there is always another couple of mk1s that come down for that. in classic trials one of the most competitive fwd cars is the good old mk1. i also do hillclimbs and sprints but have another machine for that  8)
if you are doing autotest you may want to budget for a set of scrap tyres aswell as i am not happy unless i can smoke a set away
  any questions just ask

Mine's a road rally car. Paul_c, you'd be surprised how easy a lot of stuff is to source or make. Most parts were carried over to the mk2 and beyond.

The cost of entering a Night Scatter, 12 Car, Autotest or trial is no more than a good night out, including the petrol. Sprints and Road Rallies are a little dearer because there is the cost of the venue hire to factor in. But proper Motorsport can be cheap...

Get one without a sunroof, then you can follow a longer path. (Sunroof no go for rallying and racing).

or use a sheet of ally to plate up the hole!
there is a new class in hillclimbs next year for absolutley standard production cars and i reckon the mk1 would far quite well.

I do a fair few trackdays with mine, no proper competition yet

2 1983 Campains (concours & track)
1985 Blue GTi Ragtop
2001 Bora Estate TDi SE (very very rare)
2000 Golf TDI commuter
2005 T5 Transporter with 394000 miles on it!

Unfortunately standard, does mean standard, though how it will be policed is anyone's guess - where do you draw the line?

We built a 2.0 16v Mk1 that did really well in autocross a few years ago.

Thanks!

Yes those are slicks. They were used for trackdays by the previous owner but were of a pretty hard compound and so pretty useless for short sprints and hills. I shall be running a very soft compound in a road legal slick for this year though.

I might have a few more pics somewhere… :)

Animal - I think I spoke to you over on E38 some time last year. I am in Scotland, I think you said you knew about or had raced at Doune hillclimb?

You have a Mallock with an XE?

We were talking about Pilbeam's and my mate dad has an MP58 that you said you knew of…

Where is the best place to post pics?
