The Gti did not have a carb in the first place, hence the i in GTi for fuel injection…..
So does your car have a carb already or are you removing all the injection system to fit a carb?

Sorry yeah, i shouldv'e explained.

I bought the GTi shell for a rebuild but i recieved an engine from MK1 clipper due to a favour. (Helped him strip his clipper)
The guy i got it off is unsure about the engine size so hes looking for the logbook to tell me, although he said he thinks its a 1.8, whether its true though..

Pretty sure its a 1.6?

anyway, thats the situation. hope it helps more

1.6 head has a water outlet betwen cyinders 1 and 2 and some times has 1.6 stamped on the back of the block just above the sump, there should also be a engine code under cyinder 3.
1.8 head has the water oulet between cyinders 3 and 4 and the same as above…….
Have a look and let us know.

unless its a carb engine (clippers are all carby engines aren't they?) then 1.6 and 1.8 lumps are visually identical. only way to tell is look at the engine number, or strip it and check the pistons

Well it's a head from a 1.8…
The engine code is stamped into smooth bit of metal just below No.3 spark plug, just need the first 2 letters.

yeah unfortunately to know for sure you need that engine number, shine a torch on it from a shallow angle that sometimes helps! Helpfully the 1.6 carb lump uses the same block casting as the 1.8 so it has a big 1.8 in the back of the casting, this could be why your mate thinks its a 1.8.

You're looking for EW or GU for a 1.8 carb lump, EX or EZ for a 1.6 carb lump. If the bottom end was GTI originally the common codes are DX, EV or PB. the 1.8 carb and gti bottom ends are the same, just the head that differs between them :)
