Steering Wheel Horn

Hello

I have two problems with my soon to be M.O.Td GTI, the 1st being that every time I turn the steering wheel the horn goes off, not sure if its wire related or some kind of wrong pressure on the horn !!!

The 2nd is I have no rear fog light, I have checked the dash switch and tested with a second switch to no avail so I traced the wire to the fuse box and there is no live, thats as far as I have got.

I intend to spend tomorrow sorting it all out and any help from you guys would be great.

Thanks Drapes

I had this same problem, turned out to be that the horn tab that runs against the horn ring which is underneath the wheel was pressing against and shorting on one of the stalk holding screws.
I bent the tab back upwards and placed some good quality insulation tape over the offending screw.
Job done!!!!!

I've had the horn problem, turned out that my steering rack had come off the bulk head which was pulling the steering wheel towards the front of the car. Quite scary to think I was driving around with this for a while!

Had to get the two mounts welded back on.

The fog light shouldn't be too hard to sort, I have found the mk1 fuse box to be a nightmare over the years, most of my cabs wiring comes straight from the battery via inline fuses and relays I've wired in!

If your really struggling to sort it, just run a live from the battery and relay it from the tail lights so that the fog light will only turn on when your lights are on. That way your not going to forget about it and leave it on to drain your battery and blind every one walking past the back of your car!

I have taken the steering wheel off and checked the wiring within the wheel it self and all seems ok.  So I then tried a second wheel from my Cabby and still no change. I looked at the tab that runs with the ring on the steering wheel and all was ok.  I put the original wheel back on only for there to now be no horn and a lot of clicking coming from the fuse box so I guess the fuse has gone and I have drained the battery by leaving the ignition on for no more than 10 minutes !!!

The clicking will be the horn relay I would imagine, I doubt your battery will be flat.

Did you have a look at your steering rack mounts?

There is a brown earth wire that comes from the bulk head to the steering rack to earth the horn, sometimes these corrode or fall apart.
make sure the column is earthed to the rack Via this wire.

The horn is now working fine due to the fact I found that the Bar Spacer was missing after checking the set up on my Cabby !!! The Foglight is next.

Many Thanks

Horn

Its a piece of plastic tube no longer than 1.5 inches in length with 3 notches in one end.
It sits on the steering column and by its name sake creates a space between the wheel and stalk system and so stops the horn unless or course you press it.
