Indicator/wiper stalk upgrade

Hi all
Am I right in thinking you can upgrade indicator/wiper stalks for the newer chunkier type (poss mk3)
I have a 1990 gti cabby
If you can what ones should I be using
Look forward to hearing from u
Many thanks :dontknow:

pre-90 mk2 chunky square stalks are a direct fit, though they sit closer to the wheel

I used Golf mk2 wiper & indicator stalks on my 91 Rivage cabby:

The Wiper/MFA stalk will work of any mk2 I think, but the indicator must me a pre 90 chunky type as the other ones have the hazard warning button built in the top. You also have to trim the mk1 steering cowling ever so slighty as the indicator stalk is a different shape & angle.

Pretty easy yet asthetically pleasing mod!

no they both need to be pre-90, post 90 stalks are different

post-90 mk2 or mk3 require you also change the ignition lock housing, and that means you have to grind off the tab on the column tube, plus splice on the 90spec stalk/switch plugs

snap those up, those are genuine vw parts brand new for a fraction of what crappy pattern ones go for :)

Zombie thread resurrection bump!  :ninja:

My indicators don't auto cancel any more, figured I may as well upgrade to the pre-90 Mk2 stalks while I have the steering wheel off. Any chance of the part numbers for when I get down the scrappy at the weekend? Pretty sure there's an '89 Polo in my regular yard…

Is the pre-90 distinction just the changeover point for when the hazard switch moved to the stalks, or is there a subtler difference? I'm assuming fitment is the same as on Mk3 / Corrado, ie wheel off, three bolts out, unplug as a pair?
Cheers,

basically look for the hazard switch,. if on the column they're no good, if on the dash straight swap. same goes for polo but good luck finding any pre or post 90 they're a bit like gold dust these days, as are mk2s for that matter.

mk3 and corrado use 90spec mk2 type so wont fit straight on, wiring and ign housing required etc

Wouldn't mind these on mine, those "stick" style indicators are tiny and I worry i'm going to snap them! Would any CE1 style, ie dash mounted hazard?

I'm a bit thrown on the MFA and wiper stalk, does my MK1 cabby DX even have MFA?

Thanks  :)

I knew that much, just wondered if the process of removal was the same. Had my Corrado stalks off many times ;) Will nip down the scrappy tomorrow and see what I can dig out, hopefully they haven't binned the Polo yet!

MFA = "multi-function display" (in German!). If your clock is just a clock, then you don't have MFA. MFA-equipped cars have a sliding switch and a button on the right-hand stalk, plus the clock has white text around the outside indicating different functions. Pressing the button toggles between clock/time driven/miles driven/MPG/oil temperature/outside temperature, sliding the switch to the position marked '1' shows you those things for the current trip and sliding it to the position marked '2' shows you those things since you last reset it or the battery was disconnected. You can reset either 1 or 2 individually by sliding the switch in that direction and then slightly further, which activates a momentary contact which resets it. This is all based off the Corrado MFA, pretty sure it's the same for Mk1/2 - though interestingly if you remove the outside temperature sensor then you never see that reading, it skips straight from oil temp back to the clock.

Well, I struck out at the first yard as they'd scrapped the Mk1 Polo (though I did get a couple of relay 99…) but got lucky in the second yard!

There was a very sad-looking Mk2 Polo missing its interior, wheels, suspension, lights, door handles, most of the engine and half the dash but it still had the correct indicator and wiper stalk for the Cabby so I swiped both, along with some plastic suspension caps and a choke blanking plate for a tenner :D I'll save the upgrade for when I'm next feeling adventurous. Is it possible to swap the cowling over from the early Mk2 Golf as well as the stalks? Mine's held together with tape…

I've got these clocks in mine, does this mean I should be able to access MFA with the correct stalks?

That's a set of MFA clocks, alright. Check for a loose 4-pin plug dangling inside the steering wheel cowling somewhere; when that's plugged into your new set of stalks it should all 'just work'. Note that if you replaced the clocks yourself and the car didn't already have MFA then you'll need a manifold vacuum hookup to make the MPG gauge operate correctly, plus the correct connections for oil and outside temperature sensors. edit: This is how they work when fully functional:

Except in miles and MPG, obviously :)

That's what that plug is for!! Found it hanging down under the dash but never knew where it should plug into. I'm guessing the original owner swapped the stalks because I've got the old style stick ones with no MFA button!

Lucky you! :D It's very useful to have, keeping an eye on my oil temperatures has saved my Corrado twice…

Sorry to thread-jack, but what is the difference between the clock pictured above, and these?

Is it just the extra MPG dial at the top?

And do the standard MFA indicator stalks work with my clocks? Mine have snapped :(

Post

the ones you pictured are the earlier type from mk1 tintop gti, these have the 1/2 switch on the clocks themselves with only the mode select button on the mfa stalk. plus the large mpg gauge & shift light unit at the top.

the ones earlier in the thread are later mk1 cabrio type, these ones have the 1/2 switch in the mfa stalk and no shift light.

the wiring for them both is the same except the later clocks have an extra 2 pin plug into the back from the mfa stalk, plus the mfa stalk connector is 4 pin on the late ones, 2 pin on the early.
