Hazard Switch Wiring .. Help!!!

Hi All,

I am a new member and would like to know if anyone has the following info please?

I had taken the dash out of my mark 1 cabriolet GTI and as i was doing it the Hazard Switch popped off and disconnected all the wires off the back at the same time:( oops.. anyway if anyone knows what colour wires go on what connections on the back it would help me a whole lot as i am desperate to get it on the road. i have looked in the haynes manual but it doesnt seem to be easy to trace wires :S

If anyone has any info please let me know.

or even if you could point me in the correct direction?

Thanks in advance

Matt

Hey, Thanks for that Lee, although my hazard switch does not have any white plastic plugs on the back, its just spade connections, does anyone have any pictures of which coloured wires go on which connections? Thanks again lee

Like I said to brad you should be able to reference that pic to the back of the switch mate.  If you look at the back of the switch there is a large lone spade connector next to a hole (where the bulb goes) this is for the blue and black wire.  Then once you have identified this connector you will be able to reference the rest of the switch to that pic.  trust me look at the back of your switch with this pic in front of you and you will be easily able to work it out

I had my dashboard out today to solve some rattles, I put everything back in and now can't find the black/blue wire - where does this go to so I can chase it back from source please?

Thanks Guy

1 touch window system? check the ignition live feed, do your switches come on with the ignition?

Hi gents,

Save starting a new thread.

The blue/black wire picture above has also come loose from my hazard switch. However when I reconnect it all the electrics turn on, as if I had put the key in the ignition and turned the key once. Even without the blue/black wire connected the hazards work as they should?

Any ideas?

hmm i would say hazard switch is duff, allowing perm live to back feed into the ignition live side. this feed is also then powering up the whole ignition live circuit

Jonny, you are a legend mate. I have googled alot recently re wiring and your name comes up time and time again.

A question if I may…
If the hazard swith is duff how come, that without the black/blue wire attached the switch works? It illuminates the hazard bulbs and the led behind the hazard symbol also lights up?

Again, thanks for all your help. Even posts you left from 2007 are helping mk1 owners to this day!

well its still duff, just in a way that it still works

the ignition live wire is only needed for the indicators to work, the perm live is there for the hazards. im thinking that inside the switch theres a short between the live and ignition live which is allowing current to backfeed down the ignition live wire and power up the fusebox ignition live rail.

This could be the case and yet switch still works perfectly fine so long as non of the other internal tracks are damaged :)
