gti 16v cutting out whilst driving

Post

Morning chaps,

I wonder if anyone can offer any advise on the following;

Whilst driving my car (a mk1 gti 16v) it starts to misfire, backfire and then cuts out. Whilst this is happening the rev counter goes haywire and the fuse box starts buzzing. The even stranger thing is that if the car is restarted it runs ok. I'm thinking fuel pump relay, but just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar? and also where the relay is located on the panel?

cheers bob.

fact rev counter goes nuts points to hall sensor in dizzy. check that, also look at the wiring to it and the pins in the plug carefully. be sure to pull the rubber boot back so you can check the back of the pins where its hidden. look all over for black tape, this is usually an indication of horrible bodgery

Thanks Jonny,

What do you think would explain the buzzing from the fuse box?

I will have a good inspection this evening.

Bob.

could be the pump relay, if its ecu trigger and its going nuts it'll turn it on/off/on/off. if its k-jet then the rev counter signal going mental would also do the same thing i guess

Cheers Smudger,  its an oldie but a goodie;-)…

Jonny,

As I understand it the fuel pump relay is linked to the rev counter, as it needs a signal from the rev counter to energise?

Do you know where the fuel pump relay is on the fuse board? so I can check that at the same time (for corrosion, burning odour etc.)

The car is an '83 campaign.

Bob.

on a mk1 yes the fuel relay gets triggered by the rev counter signal, on a 16v its triggered from the ecu. basically it depends how the wiring loom was made which you have.

slot 2 anyway, let us know what number it is

OK, the car is running a KR engine loom and ECU.

Is slot 2 2nd from left, top row? My blue haynes does not seem to have any info on the later fuse box type…

Ok, well, an eventfull evening was had.

I removed the fuel pump relay for checking and proceeded to take the cover off. I inspected it and seemingly there was no damage or burns etc. apart from a broken track… I'm not sure whether this happened when removing the cover:ocf_emoticons__BangHead:Anyway I tried to repair the track with a bit of solder but no luck. The fuel pump does'nt prime an obviously the car wont start.

Looks like I'll be ordering a new fuel pump relay this evening.

Pics below for reference, looks like it was a replacement anyway, not genuine.
