Thanks for the feedback Gents, one question though - Rubjohnny mentioned to run a feed without a fuse - is this safe to do?
Cheers again

I have a Pertronix 1 Ignitor electronic ignition 1847A unit and would like to know if this will fit my 1987 Golf Cabriolet 1.8, 8v?
Has anyone fitted the Pertronix unit (I have the 1847V unit in my 1977 Beetle 1.2 and it has worked perfectly for the last 8 years).

If it works on a beetle it'll work on a golf, so long as they make the right fit conversion kit for your distributor

Thats what I thought too. They are both Bosch distributors so I have no problem fitting it to the distributor. Does my '87 Golf use a high energy ignition coil and how would I check?

If it's an 87 it might already have electronic ignition, so no advantage unless that controller can allow you to tune ignition map? 3 pin plug on dizzy = electronic ignition anyway.
For coil check the wires on positive side, if the power feed from fusebox is black then it's a full 12v coil. If it's purple/white it's a resistance wire so lower voltage, and you may need to replace this wire depending on what coil is included with your kit

I checked my car today and it already has electronic ignition so I won't be changing it. Thank you for your help.
I have a blac and yellow wire in the engine bay near to the distributor that is not connected to anything? Any idea what it would be for?

It used to have an automatic choke and now has a weber so that is where the spare wire will be from. Thank you for your help with these matters - you are a wealth of information
