1.6 gti eg earth lead/alternator

Post

Morning.. i've got a small issue with the gti 1.6 eg engine, i know what the problem is but i just would like to know from anybody else who has the rubber bush mounted alternator. The problem is as follows.. the alternator will not charge or flash the dash battery led as its not earthing through the rubber mounts. If i add a earth lead everything is hunky dory and were all systems go. My question is what am i missing. All the rubber bushes are new, in fact everything is, as its been a long restoration. I assembled the alternator with the correct washers, spacers etc.. Can anybody out their confirm or offer advice on how the alternator earthed to the block on this particular engine as with the correct rubber mounts their isn't a direct connection due to the rubber grommet in the alternator bracket or the lower mounts. I've looked for similar engines as reference as i'm sure i'm missing a small alternator to head/block earth but with no joy.

Thanks for reading..

My Scirocco has a earth strap from the block near the dipstick to one of the bolts which holds the alternator together. Seems to work..

i will see if i have any pics of the engine itself..

parts 2x 33 and 49 are the mounts used on this type of alternator. i got them from vw classic parts in germany and they are exact for this car. i have it fitted exact as per the illustration and doing it this way means the alternator will not earth itself without a separate earth lead.
