if yours is a gti 1.8 engine then the breather pipe should be on the right hand side (as you look at it) of the rocker cover. it's a small spout that is raised up from the cover. check this pipe and also the gauze that is below inside the rocker cover….is it definately high pressure though?

mines not gti - its 1990 1.8 Clipper petrol (auto) engine

is it same (roughly) design as gti then?

This is (I think) a carburettor engine.
If so, the breather is in the same place, in the gearbox end of the cam-cover. I remember seeing new old-stock ones for sale at the Inters autojumble, but couldn't buy them because they don't have the welded bracket for the GTI (fuel-injection) throttle cable.
