Wanted

Hi everyone, I'm a new member to the site although I have used it many times to solve problems of my golf.

I'm now on the hunt for a mk1 or mk2 1.6 Diesel engine to replace my 1.3 petrol.

If anyone has one for sale please let me know where and for how much
Many thanks

I guess you know you will need to cut out, move and re weld the drivers side engine mount to fit a 1.6 engine into a 1.3 car?

and find a DERV gearbox/drive shafts, exhaust, wiring, fuel system, filters, suspension will be wrong etc etc. All to go slower and make more noise...

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I had no idea so much work was invloved, the reason I want to swap if I'm honest is I've been told the Diesel engines are more reliable? Mine also has a terrible misfire loses power stopes for a while.

Diesels are very reliable but if they arnt running normally it's a bit expense

Diesels need 3 things to work. Compression, heat and diesel

It will be easier and cheaper to fix the engine you have than find and fit a Diesel engine.
Petrol engines will be just as reliable as a diesel is properly serviced and looked after I use mine Mk1 as a daily drive and cover 50 miles a day when commuting to work and the engine covered 270,000 miles with nothing major going wrong with it.
Start with the basics, give it a good service, spark plugs, HT leads, dissy cap, rotor arm, fuel filter, air filter.
Check your fuel filler neck and look inside the fuel tank for rust, clean out the carb and check the flange which the carb sits on.
Do you know which carb is fitted? Webber or the original carb?
Petrol engine also only need 3 things to work, air, petrol and a spark…
