I am going to replace the cork rocker cover gasket on my '83 GTI Cab.with another cork one. The question is , do I use silicon sealant as well on the gasket or fit it dry.

Personally i don't believe in silly gum😄 Just a smear of grease to help it seal on the cover and head. That said if the faces are a bit mangled then you might have no choice.

I've replaced several on mine and the times I used sealant they have wept.

Personally I would upgrade it to the rubber seal.

There's very mixed opinions on whether to use cork or rubber but for what it's worth I'd go for cork just smeared with a little oil as above.
Just make sure that both surfaces are nice and clean firstly.
Secondly do use the correct torque settings and don't try to guess!
