Mk1 as a daily?

Post

Hi guys I havnt posted on here for ages and just wanted to get some feedback from you lot. I don't own a vw at the moment but have been offered a good example of a mk1 golf. I used to own a few mk1's years ago and I loved them. They are so much fun to drive and definitely put a smile on your face.

The only thing is my last few cars have been newer (8-10 years old) bmw's which are which are reliable and obviously more refined. Now the question I wanted to ask to fellow mk1 owners is how is it driving a mk1 as a daily? Do you guys have any problems? Break down a lot? Long time to warm up?

Oh and I wouldn't need the car for work as I train it into work.

Thanks

All of the above mate, I use my cabrio everyday - it's slow, cold noisey, stereo is rubbish, breaks down at least twice a week and I wouldn't swap it for the world !!! Worth it when you get folk taking photos and thumbs up from people when driving !!

I always drive something old daily and a MK1 is a good daily motor, will always put a smile on your face!

As long as it's serviced and looked after it should be reliable as long as it's not a shed.

mines a daily, never lets me down, though recently the temp warning light likes to flash a lot when in traffic and refuses to go out until engine turned off, can live with that though

on the plus side, alot of folk look at my car more than the brand new audis

Been using mine lil 1.3 as a daily for six months now and apart from the 5 minute warm up in the mornings she runs a treat, touch wood ;)

I've been using my Mk1 Cabriolet as a daily for 20 years and 200,000 miles, it lives out side on my drive in all weathers and in all that time I've only ever not been able to get to work once when the oil seal on the oil cooler split 1/2 mile down the road and oil was spraying out, I had some oil in the boot so topped it up and drove home, a new seal was £2.64 and an hour later a new one fitted and job done.
I also had a fuel pump relay blow but had a bit of wire in the glove box to bridge the connection so 5 minutes later the car was running again and I still got home.

As long as the car has a regular service and a good clean underneath, wheel arches and around the fuel filler neck before and after the winter, I also spray waxoly over the underneath in the summer every 2 years. Treat any rust spots ASAP they just keep going and going, the Gti gets on average 40 mpg if driven care fully in the rush hour traffic in Somerset!

As with any car new or old if you thrash and neglet them you will start to get problems.

Go on do it….. You know you want to drive something different from the usual boring new tin boxes on the roads….

I'm building mine so I can use my M3 less. Seems a waste to sit in traffic in it and get poor MPG. I've used old cars daily before and as most people have said. Look after them and they will look after you!

Good news…  I just hope the car you bought is a reliable runner, just check the filler neck for holes and rust as dirt and water in the fuel system is the cause of many a problem and expense.
