Market Watch - Went to auction today (19th March)

Post

In my opinion the prices of mk1's are all over the place with some cars asking prices being way too high and some too low.

That's more often or not the sellers fault as they do not advertise the cars correctly therefore giving potential buyers poor pics and info but still asking for proper money.

I sold my mk4 golf recently for £700, I washed, waxed, cleaned the interior, engine bay and even the spare wheel well. Checked all fluids and took good quality accurate pics and it sold in 10hrs.

Likewise my Sportline sold in 12hrs with a decent advert on my Mk1 FB page in Scotland.

A little bit of effort goes a long way and if I was wanting 5 figures for my mk1, my advert and pics would be clear and concise removing any doubt as to it's value and therefore removing the need for threads like this about it's potential value.

I personally think good quality mk1 prices are too high and I would not pay the prices being asked.

My 4 recent mk1's, Sportline, Sportline, GX and s1 have collectively cost £10k !!

My Sportline sold for £7k which is strong money for it but that was top money imo for a good decent original car.

Anyway I wrote this to save me watching boring England beating some poor team 4-0 and your media now having you as world beaters again 😁

For the "hammer" price to reach what it did it needs two bidders.

Nobody can judge a car from a few grainy low res photos online - golf gurus or not.

If I was selling my car it wouldn't be going in an auction like that anyway so if the vendor can't be bothered to hunt down a more suitable auction house then that's their look out.
The new ad (by the same company) seems a lot more comprehensive and sells it very well IMO (except for the photos)

I'll retract my statement regarding losing a potential member as it didn't actually sell but I don't think calling buyers of 5 figure cars "mugs" puts the forum in good light or helps with the values of all of our cars whether they be tintop, floppy, concours or dailies.

If we all started slating high MK1 prices on here it could put off "New Blood" buying in, stagnating the price of the cars making them less economical to repair which would lead to less being restored which really goes against what this club is about.

Well said that man! Love the way some people think that they can dictate the market without seeing cars and call someone a mug.

I remember when people thought 8k was far too much for a mk1 yet that would seem cheap nowadays. …whose the mug now?

I have sold mk1s for a LOT more than that and I would say a good investment for the new owner. So the benchmark has been set and I am sure it will be broken soon!

I think people need to chill and stop slating others due to not agreeing with people's use of a certain sentence or comment, which I'm sure was an off the cuff remark like I make all the time 👍

Everyone has their own opinion and that's what makes the world go round.

When non-members see small nippy comments like the ones on this thread, does that not push them away ?

If there are certain things that need to be said regarding comments, do it behind the scenes.

Anyway I'm collecting my s1 today from VW and it is absolutely torrential rain and blowing a gale 😁

Wish I lived in tropical England 😜

"Gentlemen, I'm expressing my opinion based on what we see and we know about this one car at the time.
If it was such good value and a sound investment, why has it been hanging around so long when there's money out there for the right cars?
We are all in agreement that if it is the real deal that it might be worth top money but from the advert we just don't see that.

Who's to blame?
Well the owner possibly (if they really know what they have) but most definitely the Auction House as it's in their financial interest to give this car the best advert and chance they can! (an Agricultural auction or close to, give me a break please)
The new advert on Pistonheads shows the car dirty while the other cars to the left look from what we see in a pristine state.

This car will sell eventually and that will indicate the real market price for this car and most likely we will never know what money changed hands.

I certainly would not expect everyone to agree with me on this but I'm entitled to give my opinion (or at least I hope) as have others and we are split about 50 - 50 on this one.

As for deterring new blood to the Club by voicing my honest opinion, well that does surprise me.
Because if I were new to this and looking for opinions on what a car might be worth, I'd like to hear what people honestly think and not just yes men nodding their heads in agreement to please the masses and influencing the potential future market values. As proven by the 50 - 50 split.

As for using the word "mug" perhaps it might have been better and politically correct to say, "an ill advised individual lacking sufficient knowledge, full of emotion standing in the Auction Hall" and paying the price on based on what we have seen.

(I did offer to take this outside the Public Forum much earlier but that has been ignored)"

I'm taking a step back from this as I think enough time and energy has been spent on this one.

I never commented as to this particular cars value as I have not seen it. All I am saying is to value a car without seeing it is daft and to put people off even more so. Maybe a bit of fun in a game but to call someone a mug is a bit off the mark. As to the length of time it has been been on sale for I think you will find the best classic cars with highest value take time to sell due to the limited amount of people with the cash to buy it. Only the buyer can decide if it is the car for them or not.

Looks like they still haven't learnt the lesson and tried to present it better.  It also looks like there is a fair bit of rust under the wheel arch, if that's just the bits that's visible wonder what else is lurking underneath.

Agreed - they may have been better off not including that particular photo!

They've not even attempted to clean the engine bay! I find that quite shocking!  :o

I'm reluctant to comment on this one now because I will be accused of bringing the value of MK1's of this type down and discouraging Mk1 owners from joining the Club and becoming paid members!

But now if we are in the range of 9k to 12k instead of 15k we are (beginning) to get down to a saleable price but again is only my opinion.

my fault for starting the thread - but I thought 'market watch' might be a bit of fun - I love to comb the 'for sales'
