Golf GTI Engine confusion

Hi,

hoping someone can help me, I have a 1982 Golf GTI mk1 (Just bought it).

The head is stamped with the numbers 049 1.6 H but the block number begins with EN?

is this correct? Sorry I am a total newbie! :$

Where does the top hose come out the head? Between 1 and 2 spark plug its a 1600 or between 3 and 4 its a 1.8…….or at least that identifies the cylinder head.

The block engine number is stamped just below the head gasket line behind the dizzy on a flat section of the block. Should start with either EG for 1.6 or DX for 1.8 - if its still got a standard engine in it.

I have done some googling and double checked the car , the head is definitely an eg 049 H 1.6 but the block is stamped with EN at the start of the serial number.
Supposedly the EN engine is 1700cc?

What would be the reason for this?

According to wiki the 1700 was only produced in America.

As far as the head number your quoting - that's not the VW part number.

What answers are you looking for?

Is it pre August '82 or after? Does it have the MFA on the dash?

if it realy is an EN bottom end I'd assume it was done to increase the power/torque, assumign the pistons are not low compression jobbers it should do tyhe trick nicely. its not a conversion I've heard of before, probably due to the fact its a very rare engine over here

Thanks for all the replies, the car is a 1982 Mk1 GTI.

Will get some pics up of the numbers. The EN number is pretty hard to read on the block.

The head number I was reading is located above cylinder 1    looking out at me when I lift the bonnet.   

Will have to double check the MFA part i know is has a small digital clock in the middle, between the speedo and rev counter.

Note the button on the wiper stalk also.

If it hasn't then it probably started life as a 1600 with EG engine code. How original is the rest of the car or is (as so many have been) mucked about with?

Have you rubbed the block engine number with sand paper to make it easier to read?

Regards a 1700 conversion it seems a bit odd to want to increase just the stroke. The whole point of the 1600 was it's revability. You'd lose that with the 1800 crank installed.
