gearing

hi all
i am still trying to restore my mk1 golf 2l 8v which has been to a few bodge supposedly professional vw garages and is still not running right so I'm taking it in to my own hands [not very skilled but eager hands] currently I'm trying to get the gears to work as there isn't enough reach from say 3rd to 4th, it used to have a 1.3 4 speed but now has a 2l 8v 5 speed and am not sure if the gear stick or linkages underneath have to be changed,I've asked a few people about this but can't get a clear answer on what car i need to get the bits from and what i actually need? any help would be appreciated

I would guess you need a big block 5 speed gear linkage, not sure which parts are actually different, incidentally I have a complete big block ( 83 gti tintop)
5 speed spare linkage, complete, which I could sell.

I think the brackets are different on the steering rack ….might be worth doing a search for how to convert a 4 spd to a 5 spd  and cross check what's been  fitted onto your car
