Is it all going to end in tears for some like the previous booms?

Clearly it's an export from Germany (Bergen) and if anyone interested in seeing it I think the guy is down in the Guildford area of Hampshire.

But as you say, in today's market who knows? I can't quite see bubble bursting for original cars anytime soon, they are getting rarer by the month - look at the prices of RS Fords, crazy high prices still for standard un-touched cars.

My view is that it is the top-end of the classic market which is becoming overheated. A result of higher-end classics being viewed as an 'investable' asset class (eugh!), similar to art and wine etc.
I was at the NEC yesterday and was shocked by some of the very average cars some dealers were offering at top-money.
eg ropey looking, high mileage, LHD 911 Turbo for nearly £70k…??
Any old rubbish with a Ferrari badge getting on for £100k or more
These are the fingers which will be burned when the market realises the king is in fact, naked.
I don't think a £5-12k Golf is likely to be a big drop waiting to happen
I do agree that you only have to see what has happened to RS and Mexico Escort prices to see that a great Golf is radically undervalued (or at least underpriced…)

Art, paintings, cars etc…
It not a new phenomenon and occasionally it can go the other way when the rates climb high again!

I think the person who bought if off UKSC surfaced on here briefly, I remember seeing it on its way to being delivered!!
I'm not sure when this was, but guessing around 2010-2012

The key to pricing is how many people want a decent original one and how many out of those people actually have the funds to buy one?
Spending the best part of two days at the NEC on our stand this weekend, I'd say there are lots of people who want a nice one and lots of people with the money to buy one! We had a similar one on the stand and it sold with in half an hour of the show opening and there seemed to be a constant stream of people offering to buy it if the sale fell through.

I thought that one looked familiar, UK Sports Cars sold it previously. Looks like the new owner is selling it on using the dealer's photos!

Would be nice for us owners if they went the same way as the E30 M3!
MK1 Golfs are too common to reach that money. At least in the near future.

Look at the cabby, I believe there were around 350,000 built in its time.
How many E30 M3?
Just on sheer numbers ours will never reach those sort of prices.
Or will they!
Over here in Austria where Mk1's are hard to find I'm seeing the prices of nice MK2's go through the roof at the moment.
Most likely because of, for one the MK1 situation and two you get more for your money if your young!

Another point worth mentioning is just how well our golfs are standing the test of time. ok so this makes them less rare, but surely also makes them more viable as an investment because it won't just rot away. Swings and roundabouts I guess..
The problem in valuing comes when an awesome car takes top money. All of a sudden anyone and everyone thinks that theirs is worth that much too. similarly in the camper van world, a few years ago the T25 Westfalia became a £10,000 camper van almost overnight (doubling in price), granted this was more of a result in rising T2 and splitty prices, but now nobody will drop their price to sell. The same vans can stay up for sale for years as a result (the odd one priced up to as much as £16,000). If this sportline on ebay hits £12,000 then we will all be rubbing our hands together but also all have cars we can't sell for this new assumed value. So if that sportline sells for that price, I think it will only increase our expectations rather than increase the value of our cars. The relationship between our expectation and sale prices will have an overall effect on market value I'm sure. Who knows what that will be..
But personally, I think we are 10 years away from the price of our cars rocketing in value and I say that because when people retire and get their lump sum from their pension or whatever financial arrangements they have made for their retirement, people will look to re live their youth and the Mk1 golf in whatever guise will be the one they all go for and there will be fewer good ones left. If you can wait that long, I think you will be laughing all the way to the bank.. Until then, I reckon a steady increase in price overall with the odd special car surprising us all..

I know of a couple of 2 door Swallowtails local to me that are complete, have very little rust but need lots of work for $1500 each.
- 1978 MK1 GL 2 door with 2.0 16v ABF, twin 40's, Recaros, lots of suspension mods. I'll get it back on the road one day.
- 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door. Was my daily doing over 1000 ks a week until it hit a truck. RIP. Got another one now and loving it!
- 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door for parts.
- 1998 Seat Cupra + another used as a donor for the MK1
- 1999 Passat Wagon. Needs street cred but at least it's a manual.
