Campaign ?

I'm not sure but I might have brought a campaign with out knowing it. Got no plates unfortunately but I have the log book. 

REG is HCL 863Y
date of first registration is 03 02 1983

Anyone shed any light on this please. 

It's a 3 door / gti / 1.8 / sunroof / twin headlights 

No it won't be, Campaigns are 99% A reg from Aug 83 onwards. They built them during the summer and there are a few registered with a Y reg but likely to be personal imports. Look at the Chassis number, Campaigns will have the letters EW in it.

sunroof, tinted glass, four lamp grilles were all options/ accessories on the standard Golf, add in some Pirelli wheels and a leather steering wheel and you have an identical model.

From the VIN number you can work out exactly the year, month, week and day the car rolled off the production line.

My guess is that your's was built at the back end of 1982.   

the main thing you need to know for sure isd the original boot sticker, or the service manual. this will show if it has the all important 'pirelli edition' campaign option codes or not
