World Record Commute to Work in MK1 Golf!

Set by yours truly this very morning, in a little over 30 minutes.

But, in that time, according the odometer, I travelled just over 80,000 miles!

Does anyone else have a longer drive to work?

80,000 miles in 30 minutes, that's some going in a Mk1, must be the land speed record for sure.  Not really sure what you are asking??
1. who takes the longest to get to work in a Mk1?
2. who travels the most miles to work in a Mk1?


50 mile round trip to commute to work for me, takes about 1 hour 30 mins in total.

my tongue was in my cheek with the questions.

my commute is actually 16 miles.

On a practical note, my knackered odometer has knackered my limited mileage insurance policy…

Is it turning over to fast, slowly or not turning at all?


There is a car on the Scirocco register which has just covered 500,000 miles on original engine!
(Same running gear as Mk1 Golf)

just random - sometimes it doesn't move at all. then it will work correctly for a few miles, then the only wheel turning can be the tens of thousands, hence adding 80,000 today, then it stopped again. speedo works fine…

Well I think that your ODO drive gear is slipping on the shaft, which is quite common….On the VDO odo's it is a red gear, that needs but a drop of super glue to resolve or a new gear.


The Moto odo's are different and usually don't have that happening to them.



Replacement gears are avail, and usually pricey.

Longest Commute that I have ever done was 375 Miles each way, Mobile Alabama, to Atlanta Georgia in my diesel golf.  I did that for about 3 days till I sorted out a weekly stay at a motel till I could locate a rental home.

5 hour commute, each way was a PITA….

I'm impressed by the fuel economy. I ended up doing over 90,000 miles today, and I still have over half a tank.

I can show you a city in Europe that even moves slower than London, Paris, Rome and even New York.
