Wheel stud conversion

Post

Has anyone done a wheel bolt to stud conversion to their cars?

I've got some wheels that need studs and won't work with bolts. I know I need to run Cragar bolts and off set washers but I also need studs and that's where I'm confused.

Any problems, advice or places to buy would be appreciated.

I stumbled across a thread on a guy doing a stud conversion to his mk5 golf a while ago… Umm

 :ocf_emoticons__eusa_boohoo:Elevator music

Thought I might stud the daily just so I can run those silly colourfully-anodised nuts  .

FOUND IT
http://golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76992&highlight=stud

Although off the top of my head I dont know if the thread is the same on a mk1, but the theory is the same

Edit:

Had a bit of a crafty google, the thread you want is m12x1.5 so these would work:

Bulletnose might be a bit excessive for daily use though. I think the theory is a bit of space to play with before thread starts, but whether you'd need/want that is  :ocf_emoticons__dontknow:.

Edit 2:

Larkspeed seem to do "normal" studs, without the bulletnose:

And thinking about it, I think that DIY thread shows tightening with an alan key… That's probably not a good idea for getting a proper torque. Standard 2 nuts locked together & torque wrench might be a better bet. Would hate to see those lovely looking Cragars rolling past you on the dual carriageway .

Edit 3:

While feverently re-researching the whole wheel studs thing, I stumbled across a little blurb on american spec wheels requiring sleeve-nuts (or tube-nuts, whatever the americanish translation is) though quite why, I'm still none the wiser… :ocf_emoticons__dontknow: I imagine that's why you need Cragar-specific fixings.

Yea I thought that as I was journeying through the internets. Lots and lots forum debates and faux-official opinions, yet very little in proper research or anything  although there does seem to be consensus that for racing applications you need splined hubs and studs. But screw-in types… :ocf_emoticons__dontknow:probably a case of not seeing the wood for the trees.

And I'm still none the wiser as to what a sleeve nut is, when not holding fluid lines together.
